Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gutsy Effort By Blue Streaks Produces 1-1 Draw In Top Of Region Showdown

John Carroll has already shown a penchant for late game goals.

Today's example may take the proverbial cake.

In a battle of the top two teams in the Great Lakes Region (according to the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll), #5 ranked John Carroll and #14 ranked Carnegie Mellon played to a 1-1 draw on a hot day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The fact that it was a draw was nothing short of miraculous.

In desperation mode as the clock ticked down the final seconds of regulation and trailing 1-0, the Blue Streaks made one last push. Jake Girardot took a pass from Hayden Parente on the left side of the box. Spotting a teammate on the run, he sent a ball on the ground toward Eric Roszits.

Roszits then sent the ball into the left side of the goal as the clock read 89:59.

John Carroll had trailed for most of the game thanks to a Carnegie Mellon goal in the 27th minute. Elliot Cohen made a great run on a pass by Jack Painter and finished it off by beating Liam McIntosh on a virtual one-on-one opportunity.

Just ten minutes before the Tartans goal, JCU had come close when it struck a crossbar on a shot by Jake Lombardo. That seemed to be a portend of things to come as JCU had several chances to net a goal but could not come up with one.

Until Roszits and his improbable equalizer.

After the incredibe finish to regulation, JCU had hoped to capitalize in the overtime period. But a second yellow on lombardo in the 94th minute meant the Blue Streaks would play a man down for at least 16 more minutes.

Neither team had great opportunities in the extra sessions. There were only three shots attempted over the final 20 minutes.

Carnegie Mellon became the first team to outshoot John Carroll this season, holding a 16-8 edge. The shots on goal edge was a bit more narrow, as the Tartans had six compared to John Carroll's three. McIntosh made five saves on the afternoon.

JCU is now 7-0-1 on the year while Carnegie Mellon's record is 6-1-1
