Blue Streaks Refuse To Go Quietly In Strong Effort Against BW

The final margin in the box score will say eleven points, but it was hardly the full story on a Wednesday night battle between crosstown and conference rivals at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

An early run in the third quarter for the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets seemed to set the pace for the second half, but a furious comeback by the host John Carroll Blue Streaks brought drama to the proceedings in what ultimately became an 82-71 victory for the visitors.

Both teams got off to a slow start with just five combined points in the first five minutes. JCU sophomore Sarah Sprecher scored the first two baskets for the Blue Streaks to give her team the early 4-1 lead with 5:17 remaining in the quarter. However, the scoring in the second five minutes would be quite the opposite, as Baldwin Wallace scored 15 points over the remaining stretch to give the Yellow Jackets a 19-12 lead after one period of play.

Nicole Heffington boosted the Blue Streaks momentum by knocking down a big three with 6:13 to play in the second quarter.  John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace traded baskets over the rest of the half which allowed the Yellow Jackets to take a 34-25 lead at the intermission.

The squad from Berea drilled their first five three pointers of the third quarter as Baldwin Wallace continued to push out the lead. At one point, the visitors had stretched the margin to 18 (61-43). Sprecher notched eight points in the final four minutes of the third to keep the Blue Streaks alive.

The comeback started quietly at first, as back-to-back baskets by Abby Adler and Heffington cut the Baldwin Wallace lead to 61-47 to start the fourth quarter.

John Carroll turned up the defense and forced two major Yellow Jacket turnovers. Dani Carlson made a layup and then a huge three pointer on back-to-back possessions to cut the Baldwin Wallace lead to 64-58 with 5:04 to play. Carlson's trey capped off an 11-1 run for JCU.

The deficit jumped between six and eight points for the next two minutes before Chelbi Graham's two free throws at the 2:32 mark made the score 72-67.

Despite a valiant effort, the Blue Streaks could not get closer than five points. Hannah Fecht hit a three pointer with 2:10 remaining to push the Yellow Jacket lead out to 75-69. The Blue Streaks refused to go away and quickly went down the floor where Heffington cashed in on an open layup.

But foul trouble would haunt John Carroll in the final four minutes. The Yellow Jackets knocked down five free throws in the final 97 seconds to help close out the victory.

Leading the way for the Blue Streaks was Heffington with 22 points. Graham and Sprecher each had 12 points a piece, while Kahrin Spear and Adler joined them in double figures with 10 each.

Riley Schill lead Baldwin Wallace with 17 points, while pulling down six rebounds and tacking on five assists.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Marietta this Saturday where they will take on the Pioneers at 3:00 p.m..
