Mount Union came in to University Heights Wednesday evening undefeated, untied and unscored upon.
Thanks to a
Mikey Burrington goal in the second overtime period, all those incredible feats went by the wayside as John Carroll earned a hard fought 2-1 overtime victory over the #13 ranked Purple Raiders at Don Shula Stadium.
With its last victory over John Carroll in a contest played on the Blue Streaks' home field dating back to 1985 (a span of 17 matches), the Purple Raiders were working against both the Blue Streaks and history. But a confident squad bolstered by an 8-0 start in which it was the lone Division III team left to not allow a goal in 2018 seemed determined to make its own history.
In the 27th minute, Mount Union struck first as Nikolas Newart took advantage of a failure to clear by the JCU defense for his first goal of the year.
The Purple Raiders outshot John Carroll, 6-2, in the opening 45 minutes as the 1-0 lead held up the rest of the half.
A more aggressive Blue Streaks side came out for the second half, and the relentless pressure paid off in the 67th minute as
Eric Rozsits sent a beautiful cross from the right side into the box where
Jared Ianiro finished the play. Ianiro's goal ended the Purple Raiders' streak of keeping the opponents off the scoreboard, halting the run at a mark of 879 minutes and 58 seconds dating back to last season.
The 1-1 deadlock held up for the remainder of regulation and the entirety of the first overtime, but would not lost more than a minute of the second overtime. Just 41 ticks in,
Justin Brown set up a run on the left side shortly after play was resumed, and sent a cross into
Jarrod McDowell, who punched a pass in the box to Burrington, who knocked the ball into the right side of the goal for his third goal of the year and his first game winner as a collegian.
John Carroll is now 6-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the OAC, while Mount Union falls to 8-1-0 and 1-1-0 in league play.
