In every game tonight, John Carroll was either tied or behind when the score spilled over into the twenties.
The Blue Streaks were able to rise up in key moments to capture every game, completing a sweep of visiting Geneva College Thursday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. JCU won by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.
In the opening frame, the Blue Streaks stormed out to a 17-10 lead, but the Golden Tornadoes rallied to knot the score at 20-20.
Up stepped
Carleen Ellerbruch with a kill and
Becca Fortsch with a service ace to build some cushion en route to a 25-22 triumph.
There were no big leads for either side in game two, with the largest margin being three points up until the score was tied 21-21. This time, consecutive kills by
Brooke Hjerpe,
Cassi Calamunci, and
Ally Bartolone made the score 24-21, and then Fortsch closed matters out with her fourth ace of the match.
Geneva appeared to be in position to force the match to a fourth set when the visitors took a 23-21 lead late, but again with Forstch serving, the Blue Streaks rose to the occasion.
Sarah Calabrese came up with two big kills, followed by a match ending block by Ellerbruch and
Emma Abfall, and the sweep was posted.
John Carroll hit .239 as a team, and was led by 10 kills apiece from Calabrese and Hjerpe. Audrey hardig had a clean night, with six kills and no errors in eight attempts for a .667 attack percentage. Bartolone had a team-high 20 assists and her three aces were a compliment to Fortsch's team-leading four. Caithin Cianciolo had 20 digs, complimented by Hjerpe's 11.
Geneva was led by 12 kills from Sydney McNulty and 23 assists from Daphne Hunsinger.
John Carroll is now 11-8 on the year, snapping a season-long four match skid. Geneva falls to 10-9 with the loss.
