Four Distinct Quarters Mark John Carroll's Rise And Fall At CWRU

John Carroll's effort today at Case Western Reserve would be best described as a theatrical play in four acts.

There was Act I, a tough beginning in which the Blue Streaks fell behind 24-12 in the first quarter.

Act II was highlighted by a great reversal of fortune in which the upstart Blue Streaks outscored the host Spartans, 19-7, in the second quarter to tie the game at 31-31 heading in to the intermission.

In Act III, there was turmoil. John Carroll led by as many as four points on two occasions, and there were three ties and three lead changes. As the curtains closed, Case held a 50-48 lead.

The finale, Act IV, proved to be a tough ending for the Blue Streaks, as the undefeated Spartans made 17-20 free throws over the final 12 minutes to salt away a 79-65 victory at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The two biggest difference in the contest were CWRU's advantages on the glass (51-33) and at the free throw line (JCU attempted six free throws, Case attempted 33).

John Carroll (2-2) was led by 13 points and five assists off the bench from point guard Leslie Aguilar. Nicole Heffington added 12 points and a team-best five boards. Sara Spicer tallied 11 points on 4-7 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc.

CWRU (4-0) was paced by a pair of double doubles by Kara Hageman (18 points, 12 rebounds) and Hillary Hellmann (13 points, ten rebounds). The Blue Streaks forced 20 turnovers but the Spartans were an efficient 7-18 (.389) from three-point range.
