Great Start, Great Finish Carry Blue Streaks To Road Win Over Muskingum

The memory of last year's visit to New Concord may have still been fresh on the minds of the Blue Streaks when they played there Saturday afternoon.

Muskingum became only the second team to hang 100 or more points on a Kelly Morrone coached team when the Muskies prevailed, 103-97, in overtime last December.

Today, the JCU defense simply would not allow a repeat performance. The Blue Streaks prevailed, 73-58, thanks to a lockdown effort in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Streaks started off hot with a 10-2 run to start off the game. During the 10-2 run, Abby Adler hit a three and Bri Pittenger made a layup.  After the final buzzer in the quarter sounded, John Carroll had totaled 21 points and only allowed 12.

John Carroll maintained that lead throughout the second period, taking a 38-29 advantage into the locker room.

JCU led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, but the host team did its best to chip away. When Devyn Bonner scored on a lay-up with 52 seconds remaining in the stanza, Muskingum trailed by just four points at 55-51.

The Blue Streaks would come out in the final quarter with great intensity on the defensive side of the ball, limiting Muskingum to 2-15 shooting from the floor over the final ten minutes.  John Carroll did not allow a Muskie field goal until the 3:04 mark when Olivia Lang made a jumper. But by that time, the damage had been done as JCU had built a 15-point lead, fueled by three-pointers from Dani Carlson and Sara Spicer.

JCU, which had won only three road games over the previous two seasons, won for the second time on the road this year.

Carlson would lead the way for the Blue Streaks, scoring 16 points, including 11 points in the second half.  Nicole Heffington grabbed a team high eight rebounds to go along with 13 points. Two other Blue Streaks scored in double figures -- Leslie Aguilar and Sarah Sprecher collected 11 and 10 points, respectively.

John Carroll moves to 5-3 on the year with a 2-1 record in the OAC, while Muskingum falls to 1-8 and a 0-3 record in the OAC.

The next time the Blue Streaks will play is next Saturday the 15th against Ohio Northern University at home in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 3 o'clock.
