JCU Baseball Runs Winning Streak To Six Before Splitting Twinbill With Student Princes

| By:
Sam Heaton (#1)
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 John Carroll hit the road once again and found success late in game one to run its winning streak to a season-long six games. Heidelberg, however, flipped the script and scored 13 of its 14 runs in the final four innings to break open a close game.

Game One - John Carroll 12, Heidelberg 5
Despite the 17 runs scored, this game started out as a pitcher's duel.

Aaron Zawadzki got the scoring started off for the Blue Streaks, scoring the game's first run in the top of the first inning when Monroe Donnelly singled down the left field line.

JCU added a second run in the third inning on a Dom Mittiga RBI hit.

Senior Steve Virost started off strong on the mound, retiring the first seven batters he faced and throwing four shutout innings. JCU would take a 2-0 lead into the fifth frame.

That was where Heidelberg would get to Virost, scoring twice in both the fifth and sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

It seemed as though momentum had shifted heavily toward the Student Princes. JCU had four hits, but Heidelberg starter Cameron Deemer, who began the day 5-1, had settled in and had retired eight in a row heading to the top of the seventh.

Trailing for the first time in since an 11-5 loss to Capital back on March 25, the Blue Streaks needed a rally. It started innocently enough with David Ferguson getting a lead off single, and then Sam Heaton delivered in a pinch hitting role to put runners at the corners. Michael Anderson then induced a walk to load the bases.

With a golden opportunity to cut into the lead, the top of the order was due up. Patrick Keohane stepped up to the plate and put the ball in play.

Sometimes, that is all that is needed. The Student Princes had a hiccup in the field with a throwing error that enabled two run to score, tying the game for JCU.

John Carroll would tack on two more runs in the inning, thanks to RBI doubles by Zawadzki and Mittiga, to take a 6-4 lead.

In the eighth inning the Blue and Gold would pour it on increasing their lead to eight. Matthew Donnelly, John Bondi, Zawadzki and Mittiga all collected RBI hits to put the game out of reach.

Cameron Mayle come on in relief for three innings worth of action, which Heidelberg would only be able to get one run off of the sophomore as he earned his third save.

Virost picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Game Two - Heidelberg 14, John Carroll 6

The Blue Streaks started off game two similar to game one, but with more authority in the first inning, batting around the lineup and bringing four runs in off starter Sam Ankrom. But Heidelberg reliever Joe Wenning put the fire out and allowed his team to come back.

Ferguson came up to the plate with the bases loaded and grounded into a fielder's choice, but brought Zawadzki in for the first run of the game.

Joe Charpentier and Mike McCarty also drove runs in the opening frame. Unfortunately that would be 80 percent of the runs John Carroll scored in the entire game.

The Student Princes woke up in the fifth inning and scored six runs, taking advantage off John Carroll miscues to turn a three-run deficit into a three-run lead. Of the six runs in the fifth, none were earned as two errors contributed to the implosion. John Merrill took the loss as his record slipped to 2-3.

John Carroll did try to answer in the seventh, scoring one run to cut Heidelberg's lead to 7-5. But the Student Princes removed all drama by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh and four more times in the bottom of the eighth, emphatically ending John Carroll's six-game winning streak.

For the day, Charpentier was 3-5 with two RBI, while Zawadzki was 4-9 (.444) with three runs scored and three RBI. Heaton was a perfect 2-2 in pinch hitting opportunities.

Up next, John Carroll will continue their road ways and travel to Ada, Ohio this Saturday April 14, to take on Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears owns a 6-2 mark in conference. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
