The John Carroll University volleyball team started off the 2018 season at the Carey Center in Latrobe, PA, with a two day tournament. After enduring a tough rebuilding season, the Blue Streaks dominated the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg in three sets (25-7, 25-11, 25-10). After a hard fought battle, John Carroll fell to the Titans of Westminster College (19-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 13-15).
With a relatively young roster, freshman jitters were nonexistent as John Carroll's starting lineup consisted of four each game. "It's not about the number or the age," Head Coach Michelle Benoit stated. "It's about the effort you put in on the court."
Leading the Blue Streaks to their first victory of the season was sophomore Sarah Calabrese with seven kills. Freshmen Audrey Hardig and Cassi Calamunci chipped in four kills a piece. Freshmen Ally Bartolone and Rachel Bleile in both games recorded a total of 32 assists and 35 assists.
During the second match, freshman Brooke Hjerpe lead the way with 19 kills and 20 digs, followed by Calabrese and Calamunci, providing 15 kills and 13 kills each.
On the defensive side and highlighting the night, senior Caitlin Cianciolo clocked in 16 digs and 30 digs, effectively earning her 1000th career dig.
The Blue Streaks capped off the night with a 1-1 record, and will play Waynesburg University at 12:00 P.M. and Oberlin College at 4:00 P.M.
