John Carroll Gets Golden Goal From McDowell In National Tournament Rematch

For the second consecutive season, a regular season match between the Blue Streaks and the Battling Bishops would have to be decided in overtime. The result was the same, but a different scoreline this time.

104 minutes of play could not separate the two teams. The 105th minute did. Senior Jarrod McDowell's first career goal delivered a 1-0 victory for the Blue Streaks over the host Battling Bishops Saturday night in Delaware, Ohio.

In the first meeting between the two teams since the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championship (won by JCU, 3-1), the defenses of both JCU and OWU smothered the opposing offenses for much of the first half. Physicality would also be a factor with both teams accruing six would in the first 45 minutes of play. The first shot of the game didn't come until the 21st minute when the Battling Bishops tried their luck at goal. Ohio Wesleyan led the shot battle at half time 6-3, but all of John Carroll's shots were on net with Stephen Schutt finding the frame twice, and Jared Mattei once.

OWU goalkeeper J.P. Baughman turned away all three shots from JCU. Tommy Gallina, making his second career start in goal, saved the only shot on goal from the Battling Bishops.

Defense would continue to be the name of the game, but the intensity would pick up. JCU and OWU exchanged eight fouls in the second half. The Battling Bishops would win the shooting battle once again. They fired seven shots, but only one hit the target in the 65th minute, and Gallina made the save. JCU had two shots, with one from William Turrittin being saved in the 56th minute.

The last minutes of regulation would be hectic for the John Carroll defense as Ohio Wesleyan earned a couple set pieces late. The defense of the Blue Streaks would stave off the attack, however, and the game went to overtime for the second straight match.

The first ten-minute overtime session had OWU take three shots. None of them found the net, and the Blue Streaks were able to keep them scoreless. After a save from Gallina in the second overtime session, a ball played from William Grubbs found space between the back four defenders of Ohio Wesleyan and their goalkeeper. From there, McDowell was able to make a run on the ball. Facing a one-on-one chance, McDowell was able to slide it past Baughman for the game-winning goal for JCU in the 105th minute.

This is the third time in two seasons that the Blue Streaks have defeated the Battling Bishops, with two overtime wins in the regular season, and one win in regulation in the First Round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament.

JCU will play their second straight road game this Wednesday, September 19th, as they take on Hiram at 7:30 PM.
