There was a lot of fight in the John Carroll women's soccer team on Saturday as part of Senior Day at Don Shula Stadium.
But against a nationally ranked opponent such as Hope College, there would little room for error. Two Blue Streaks errors proved especially costly as the #13 ranked Flying Dutch left University Heights with a 3-0 victory.
Head coach
Michael Marich started his eight healthy seniors this afternoon, and their energy was party of a scrappy opening 35 minutes in which neither team was putting much on goal. But in the 36th minute, Hope broke through. Sarah Mikesell took a precision pass from Rylie Dalton in space and pounded a shot to the right side for the first goal.
61 seconds later, a defensive breakdown led to the second Flying Dutch goal. Grace Bubin gathered in an errant pass in the box and had a virtual tap in for the tally. The two goal lead held foe the remainder of the half.
The score was still 2-0 until late in the contest when another misplayed ball deep in the box led to a point blank shot for Dalton, who sealed the win with her third goal of the season in the 88th minute.
Danielle DelGiudice made nine saves in the contest as JCU fell to 3-5-1 on the year. Hope improved to 6-0-1 with the victory in the first meeting between the two programs.
Hope finished the game with a 25-4 shots advantage.
