Record Breaking Day For Blue Streaks As John Carroll Rolls To 90-Point Victory

Records are made to be broken.

John Carroll University's 90-0 win over the Capital Crusaders broke the record for most points scored in program history and the most points scored in an Ohio Athletic Conference game.

The Blue Streaks matched their 90-0 win over Valparaiso on September 28, 1929, and exceeded Mount Union's and Ohio Northern 84-point outputs in the 2013 and 1993 season.

JCU punched the ball in the end zone on the ground 10 times. That mark broke the OAC record for rushing touchdowns in a single game. Twelve rushing touchdowns against Valparaiso in 90 years ago still stands as the school record.

"After the Mount week, we went to work and got better," said head coach Rick Finotti. "We had a great work ethic. We put our nose to the grindstone and trust the process."

JCU scored a combined 80 points in the previous four games this season.

"We always look at our offense as a process. We just keep getting better," offensive coordinator Jeff Fink in the locker room afterwards. "Today the guys clicked a little bit more. It is a credit to the work we have put in from week-to-week."

It all started on defense with Tyshawn Jones, and when he hauls in an interception, the Blue Streaks always respond with a touchdown. And in today's case, JCU answered any questions that were remaining about the Blue and Gold offense.

Following a Jones interception, Mike Canganelli scored one of his three touchdowns five minutes into the opening quarter.

Canganelli finished with 156 rushing yards along with his career-high three touchdowns.

It was not just Canganelli that broke threw with the big plays for the Blue Streaks offense. Devin Limerick's lone carry of the first half ended in a 55-yard score to put JCU ahead two touchdowns.

Canganelli added two of his three touchdowns in the second quarter. He matched Limerick with the longest run of the day being 55-yards to put JCU ahead 28-0 — the most points scored in a half for the Blue and Gold this season.

"We came into the game in an attacking mindset," said Fink. "I was happy with our execution early. This was the first time we put a complete game together."

Just 47 seconds into the second half, Jake Floriea connected with Evan Nugent for a 68-yard touchdown. That play was the longest passing play of the day and secured the most points scored for the Blue Streaks this season.

Following a second Limerick score, Deven Ward and Matt Buser scored their first career touchdowns in the third quarter. Anthony Lupo added two field goals.

Howard Frazier's 84-yard run in the fourth quarter was his first career score and longest play of the season.

"Those young guys work so hard. It is great for those guys to get that playing time," said Finotti. "It is hard to get reps with a lot of the older guys. It makes it even better when the older guys are cheering for you on the sideline."

The defense stood out as well in their first shutout of the season.

With 12:42 left in the fourth, Jake Bunofsky hauled in his first career interception. 29 different players made a tackle in the win.

Bricker Thiel blocked a punt two minutes later.

The Blue and Gold defense held the Capital offense to 141 yards.

Next week, the Blue Streaks will return home on Saturday to host Ohio Northern at Don Shula Stadium.
