Volleyball Stays Perfect At Home With A Pair Of Sweeps In Saturday Tri-Match

John Carroll hosted Pitt-Bradford and Capital in a tri-match Saturday at the DeCarlo Varsity Center, and went 6-0 on the day after defeating both teams in a pair of sweeps.

In the match that mattered more than the others, JCU powered its way to a sweep of Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital to get a notch in the win column. John Carroll won by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-23.

Brooke Hjerpe had nine kills to lead an offense that produced a .248 attack percentage. Ally Bartolone had 27 assists and Anna Coughlin had 16 digs. Ava Nice had four solo blocks as part of nine team blocks.

JCU then faced Pitt-Bradford, and the first game was neck and neck until the halfway point, where John Carroll pulled away with a solid 14 point lead. Coughlin was the key as she rattled off five service aces in a row as the Blue and Gold rolled to a 25-11 win.

The score remained much closer throughout the second set, but remained in favor of John Carroll, who was victorious over Pitt-Bradford by a score of 25-23.

John Carroll continued rolling through the third set, when they took a late-in-the-game lead over the Panthers. However, Pitt-Bradford rallied back from a seven-point deficit to tie the game up at 23. The final points of the match were hard-fought by both teams, but resulted in John Carroll finishing the sweep, 27-25.

Sarah Calabrese paced the Blue Streak's offense with 12 kills in the match, followed by Kailee Herbst with nine. On defense, Hjerpe was responsible for 17 digs, followed closely by Coughlin with 16.

John Carroll moves to 17-6 (1-2 OAC) on the season, and 5-0 at home in 2019.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action at home on Tuesday, October 15 in a conference match against Otterbein.
