It was a match John Carroll had to have, but Marietta had the same mindset.
In the end, the Pioneers were two points better than the Blue Streaks, emerging victorious in a five-set see-saw match. Marietta prevailed by the scores of 14-25, 25-19, 25-20, 14-25 and 16-14.
JCU led 5-0 and 11-7 in the final frame, but could not find the dagger. Marietta would tie the match at 11-11, 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before winning the final two points.
Senior Day could not have started much better for the Blue Streaks, who honored
Jenna Dvorsky before the match. Two service aces from
Ally Bartolone to start the match gave John Carroll a lead it would never surrender. The Blue and Gold was up 20-11 at one point before Marietta began to find a groove. Although the Pioneers outscored JCU 8-5 down the stretch, the Blue Streaks had enough cushion to hold on for a 25-18 win.
The second set was a polar opposite of the first, as it was Marietta who burst out to a 3-0 lead. JCU would catch the visitors at 12-12 and 14-14, but the Pioneers made a kick to pull away. The third set was very similar, as Marietta broke away from a 13-13 tie to take a two sets to one lead.
John Carroll's sharpest set was the fourth. Hitting at a .382 clip, the Blue Streaks charged out to an 18-6 lead, and would force a fifth and deciding set.
Cassi Calamunci matched a career high 24 kills, while
Brooke Hjerpe added 19 for John Carroll (17-10, 1-6 OAC), who must now win one of its remaining two matches to make the OAC Tournament field. Bartolone matched her career high of 46 assists.
Sam Ritenour had 21 kills for Marietta (14-13, 3-4 OAC)
