Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Blue Streaks End 2019 Calendar Year With A Victory And A Heffington Milestone

The 2019 calendar year was good to the John Carroll University women's basketball team.

It was a calendar year that brought a first outright Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title, a first OAC Tournament crown, a third all-time NCAA championship appearance, and 24 victories out of a possible 28 games.

JCU ended the calendar year Sunday afternoon with an emphatic win, using another suffocating defensive effort to produce a 78-41 victory over Goucher College on the second and final day of the 2019 Marriott Columbus Airport Holiday Tournament hosted by Capital University.

But it was something on the offensive end that was memorable as well.

With her 18th and final point of the game, junior Nicole Heffington reached 1,000 points for her career. She reached the milestone in 65 career games.

All the drama was removed in the opening period, as John Carroll raced out to a 28-11 lead. Abby Adler started out hot, scoring eight points in the opening five minutes on 3-3 shooting, which included two three pointers.

The defense was relentless in the second period, as Goucher was able to manage just seven points as the Blue Streaks took a 44-18 lead to the locker room.

The only outcome left to be decided would be if Heffington would reach her 1000 points. She sank a free throw in the fourth quarter to hit the mark on the dot.

With their seventh consecutive victory, the Blue Streaks improved to 9-1. John Carroll shot 33-48 (.485) for the game, and was led by 20 points from Olivia Nagy, 18 from Heffington and 12 from Adler. Kaelyn Underwood led all players with nine rebounds.

Nagy was named to the all-tournament team.
