Win Over Powerful UW-Oshkosh Highlights A Split On Day One For JCU Baseball In Kentucky

John Carroll spent a lot of energy to beat a powerful UW-Oshkosh team in the first game of a doubleheader today in Lexington, Kentucky. The second game did not go the Blue Streaks way, leading to a split of Saturday's action.

Game One
Today was the first time that John Carroll faced off against Wisconsin-Oshkosh on the baseball field.  After a tightly fought game, the Blue Streaks won to boost their win total to nine on the year.

UW-Oshkosh was 34-10 and an NCAA regional finalist a year ago, and began the year ranked #18 in the d3baseball.com national poll.

John Carroll's offensive production started early and continued throughout the game.  The Blue Streaks hopped out to a quick 7-3 lead after three innings of play.

In the first it was Aaron Zawadzki who kicked the scoring off when he drove in Joe Charpentier and Dom Mittiga to answer the one run that the Titans scored in the top of the first.

After the Titans scored two in the second, the Blue Streaks answered back once again by scoring three runs.  Sam Heaton drove in a pair of runs and was followed by Dom Mittiga RBI to push the score to 5-3.

In the third David Ferguson hammered a ball over the wall to drive in Justin Hanley and himself to make the score 7-3.  The Blue Streaks tacked on another run in the fourth after the Titans scored one to make the score 8-4 after four innings.

The Blue Streaks manufactured a crucial run in the fifth inning when they had men on first and third.  Patrick Keohane stole second and when he was doing that, Derek Penman raced home from third to steal home and give John Carroll nine runs.

Duncan Cappar came into pitch the eighth, and he was lights out.  Cappar struck out the side to silence the Titans bats to give his offense a chance to increase the lead.

After a couple of dry innings, the Blue Streaks came to bat in the eighth inning leading by a slim 9-8 lead.  Hanley came in clutch by doubling home two runs to stretch the lead to 11-8, those two runs would be hugely important.

Cappar came back out again to get the save.  Wisconsin Oshkosh manufactured a couple of runs in the ninth, but Cappar weathered the storm, and struck out his fifth batter with two runners on to end the game.

The Blue Streaks pitching staff was missing barrels all game by striking out the Titans for 14 of 27 outs.  Cappar lead the staff with five strikeouts in two innings pitched, John Merrill (who got the win) struck out four, Nate Wenson stuck three out, and Jack Bennett finished with two.

Game Two
The Blue Streaks offense didn't carry over their hot bats into game two, dropping a 13-5 decision.

The Blue Streaks led at one point, 4-3, but Transylvania got a big offensive output in the seventh inning when they scored seven runs putting the score out of reach at 10-4.

Mitch Midea suffered his first loss of his career.  Midea went six-plus innings, allowing six earned runs, two of which came in the seventh.  Midea did pick up where the pitchers in game one left off in the strikeout column when he struck out eight batters throughout the course of the game.

The Blue Streaks did have a couple of shining stars with the bats however.  Patrick Keohane hit his third home run of the year in the fifth inning to put the Blue Streaks on the board.  Derek Penman went 3-3 for the game, on the day Penman was 5-7 on the day and got his 100th career hit against Wisconsin Oshkosh.

The Blue Streaks will play Transylvania again tomorrow morning, looking to get their 10th win of the year, right now John Carroll sits at 9-4.
