There were so many numbers to like for the home team this evening at Don Shula Stadium, but the numbers that mattered the most were 17 goals for Mount Union and ten goals for John Carroll.
Tonight's rivalry OAC matchup between the Blue Streaks and the Purple Raiders started out in favor of the visitors, who ran with it and handed the JCU women's lacrosse team their fifth loss of the season.
It was an incredibly efficient night for Mount Union, who took 28 shots overall and 25 were on goal.
It was also a good night for the JCU offense, who put ten goals into the net against the stingiest defense in the conference. Prior to this match, the Raiders allowed a combined nine goals all season in league play.
The Purple Raiders were first to score, but freshman
Alex Heishman answered with two goals in less than one minute. The Blue Streaks lead didn't last long, with Mount Union netting three goals in less than one minute.
Elyssa Zablo secured five saves inside the net but would be relieved by
Kaleigh Kotula with two minutes left in the first half.
Brooke McQuinn scored a goal in the last five seconds of the half and Heishman secured herself a hat trick, but the Raiders would outscore the Blue Streaks 6-2 for the remaining 22 minutes of the first half to gain a 10-4 advantage.
Though the score may not have shown it, the Blue Streaks played evenly with the Raiders having won seven draw controls each in the first half and causing eight turnovers.
In the second half, Grombala tallied three goals, securing her ninth hat trick of the season.
Brittany Pritchard and Heishman also tallied one each, but this would not be enough to come back from the deficit. The Raiders sticks would stay hot to tally seven more goals.
Heishman led the team in goals, scoring five and securing her seventh hat trick of the season.
Kotula secured three saves in her 22 minutes played between the first and second half, and Zablo returned to finish the last 10 minutes of the match. The Blue Streaks defense played strong throughout the whole game.
As a team, JCU tallied a 15-13 advantage in draw controls, collected 26 ground balls compared to UMU's 25, and owned a 16-10 advantage in caused turnovers.
John Carroll is now 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.
The Blue Streaks next matchup will be next Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 6:30Â p.m. against Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
