In a rematch of last year's OAC Tournament Championship game, John Carroll's furious comeback effort fell just short of defeating Baldwin Wallace this time around.
The Blue Streaks, who had trailed 8-1at the intermission, rallied all the way back to within a single goal at 9-8 and had a possession with a chance to tie, but ultimately fell by a 13-10 score Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets, who were beaten in that title match by ten goals in 2018, looked to turn the tables completely. They came out of the gate firing, taking a quick 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. Junior Justin Presutti scored back-to-back goals to get the Yellow Jackets on the board, and senior Chad Steinwachs netted a third goal shortly after.
Two additional Baldwin Wallace goals from Senior Blake Bower and Steinwachs again extended the lead to five.
In the final seconds of the opening quarter, sophomore Brenden Whitty put John Carroll on the board with his first goal of the game. Baldwin Wallace led 5-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Steinwachs opened the second quarter up for the Yellow Jackets with his third goal of the game. Just three minutes later, Nicholas Nanosky extended Baldwin Wallace's lead to 7-1.
James Brown added one more for the Yellow Jackets, giving them an 8-1 advantage at the half.
Senior
Jacob Betz recorded eight saves in goal for John Carroll in the first half.
The Blue Streak's found their offense in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring three consecutive goals in the first three minutes of play coming from
Patrick O'Grady,
Cam Gerard, and
Ian Flynn.
The Yellow Jackets responded with a goal from Thomas Moesch, with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter to bring the score to 9-4. But back-to-back goals from
Skyler Blake brought the Blue Streaks within three. Blake continued to stay hot offensively, netting his third goal of the night with three minutes left in the quarter to cut the Yellow Jacket lead even further to just two, leaving the score at 9-7 at the end of the quarter.
Whitty continued the offensive streak into the fourth quarter for John Carroll, netting his second goal of the night in the opening minutes. Whitty's 20th goal of the season made the score 9-8 and the Blue Streaks seemed to have all the momentum
Just as quickly as JCU had gained it, Baldwin Wallace stole it back. A turnover on a possession that JCU could have used to tie the game was turned into points the other way in transition. A goal from Moesch, on an assist from Steinwachs, started a three-goal spurt that put matters effectively out of reach. Ben Kubiak extended the lead for Baldwin Wallace with two goals in consecutive possessions, making the Yellow Jacket advantage 12-8.
Josh Plarr added one more for the Blue Streaks to cut the lead back to three, with three minutes left in the game. Kubiak responded, once again, for Baldwin Wallace netting his third goal of the contest.
In the final minute of the game, Blake scored once again, but the Blue Streak efforts came up short.
Blake led the Blue Streaks with four goals and four points. Betz finished the game with 13 saves.
Evan Schneeberger helped JCU win 17 of 25 faceoffs, but John Carroll was undone by 25 turnovers, of which only nine were caused.
