John Carroll traveled thousands of miles to earn its first volleyball victory of the 2019 campaign, sweeping Linfield in its opening match of the weekend as part of a 1-1 day at the Oregon Trail Classic Friday in Newberg, Oregon.
The Blue Streaks opened the day against Linfield and posted a 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 triumph.
Sarah Calabrese led the way on offense with 11 kills, while
Cassi Calamunci added nine.
Ally Bartolone and
Shannon Atwell combined for 25 assists.
Anna Coughlin had a solid first outing as the starting libero, collecting 22 digs.
In its second match, JCU dropped a four-set affair to host George Fox University. Although the Blue Streaks won the first set, the hosts rallied to put the match in their win column, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 26-24.
Calabrese and Calamunci each had 13 kills to account for 26 of the team's 43 markers in that category. Bartolone had a team high four service aces to go along with a team-best 19 assists.
John Carroll will conclude its weekend with matches on Saturday against Willamette and Pacific.
