John Carroll Overpowers Ohio Wesleyan In Latter Half Of Match To Earn Another Road Win

After splitting the first two games, John Carroll got down to business and dominated the latter half of the match in beating host Ohio Wesleyan Tuesday evening in Delaware, Ohio.

John Carroll earned a 25-19, 14-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over the Battling Bishops to improve to 13-3 on the season. It was also the Blue Streaks' fourth road win of 2019, matching their road win total from all of last year.

The Blue and Gold burst out to a 10-6 lead in the first game and never looked back in taking the set. But game two was the complete opposite, as Ohio Wesleyan broke from a 6-6 tie with four straight points and never trailed again to square the match at one set apiece.

The decisive set was the third, where the Blue Streaks never trailed at any point. The combo of Brooke Hjerpe, Cassi Calamunci and Sarah Calabrese proved lethal as JCU steadily moved to the finish line.

John Carroll trailed early in the fourth, 3-1, but then rattled off 14 of the next 20 points. The Battling Bishops pulled to within 22-21, but John Carroll responded by winning the last three points in succession - the last two on a Sarah Parey ace and a Calamunci kill.

Hjerpe (13), Calamunci (12) and Calabrese (10) all finished in double digits for kills, while Hjerpe (16 digs) and Calabrese (17 digs) did the same in digs. Parey and Anna Coughlin combined for five of John Carroll's nine aces. Coughlin also had 16 digs.

Ally Bartolone ran the offense efficiently with 32 assists.
