John Carroll continued its hot start to the 2019 campaign by sweeping the host Fighting Scots from the College of Wooster Wednesday night.
All three games were close, but all fell the Blue Streaks' way by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-23.
JCU had a four-point lead in the opening frame, but Wooster rallied to tie the score at 22-22. From there, the Blue Streaks scored three of the final four points - including back-to-back kills from
Kailee Herbst and
Sarah Calabrese -- to ice the game.
In the second game, John Carroll led 13-7 and 19-14, but would find itself in a dog fight down the stretch. The score was tied at 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24 before
Brooke Hjerpe posted the final two points via kills to cement a 26-24 win.
Wooster had a lead for a majority of the third frame, but the Blue Streaks overcame a 19-16 deficit by winning nine of the final 13 points to complete its first road sweep of the Fighting Scots since the 2000 season.
Calabrese and Hjerpe had 12 and ten kills, respectively, to lead a an attack that finished the night with a .218 attack percentage.Â
Ally Bartolone had 17 assists and
Anna Coughlin had 14 digs to lead JCU in those categories.
John Carroll is now 4-1 on the year, which is its best five-match start since going 4-1 to start the 2014 year.
