Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A History Making Night By Nagy Punctuates The 20th Win of The Season For JCU Women's Basketball

Going into tonight's contest, the Blue Streaks came in with a chip on their shoulder, their longest losing streak of the season -- two games.

John Carroll took care of that chip after knocking off the host Otterbein Cardinals by a score of 68-59 in Westerville Wednesday night.

One of the main reasons for John Carroll's victory was courtesy of Olivia Nagy. Nagy broke a 29-year-old school record for the most rebounds in a single game after grabbing 28 boards against Otterbein.

The single most rebounds in a game record was previously held by Hall of Famer Cindy Shumaker, who tallied 23 caroms on February 18, 1991, against Muskingum.

Nagy's final stat line tonight read 28 rebounds, 23 points, five blocks and two steals.

In the first quarter, the Cardinals found their way past the Blue Streaks defense scoring the first four points. John Carroll wasted no time in responding with a 8-0 scoring run consisting of two three-pointers by Dani Carlson giving John Carroll an 8-4 lead.

The Cardinals climbed back and took a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a comeback quarter for the Blue Streaks. Carlson kicked it off by draining her third three-pointer of the night, which was followed by Nicole Heffington hitting two back to back two-pointers tying the game up 18-18.

Heffington at the 5:52 mark scored a layup, giving the Blue and Gold their first lead (22-20) since the first quarter.

Nagy hit a shot from outside the paint adding to the growing Blue Streaks lead of 34-29.

Going into the locker room, John Carroll held their biggest lead of the game 36-30.

Nagy led the team with 14 rebounds, 11 points, and four blocks at halftime.

Out of the locker room, Nagy continued to find success shooting. Nagy scored the first six points for JCU in the third quarter lifting the Blue Streaks to a 10-point lead (42-32). The Blue and Gold led by a convincing  score of 52-43 going into the fourth and final quarter.

Despite being down, Otterbein came out strong in the fourth quarter looking to make a comeback.

Abbie Scholz knocked down a three-point shot at the 9:29 mark. The Cardinals shooting stayed hot and cut the John Carroll lead to 56-51 with 5:29 left.

The scoring remained silent for both teams until Heffington nailed a three point shot at the 2:32 mark making the score 59-51.

Nagy continued to grab more rebounds in the remaining moments as well as scoring four free throws putting the Blue Streaks back up by 10 points.

John Carroll maintained its command down the stretch and won the game by nine points.

Heffington scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with two assists and two blocks. Carlson also reached double figures 13 points.

The win was the 20th of the season for John Carroll, marking just the sixth time in program history that the Blue Streaks have reached that victory total. John Carroll is now 20-4 overall, and 14-3 in the OAC.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Feb. 22, against Wilmington College at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM. This will be the last regular season game for the Blue Streaks.
