Senior night is a momentous occasion for every team and tonight the John Carroll men's basketball team made it even more special.
Led by the four seniors in
Ryan Berger,
Jimmy Berger,
Sean Flannery, and
Connor Fitzgerald, the Blue Streaks ended a night made for them with an 88-67 win over Otterbein.
The victory takes some sting off last Saturday's loss to Ohio Northern. The Blue Streaks now control their own destiny with regard to home court for the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal round. A win on Saturday and JCU would host as either a #3 or #4 seed. The Blue Streaks are currently tied for third with a 9-8 conference ledger along with Baldwin Wallace and Capital.
With one of the best starts of the season, the Blue Streaks sprung a 15-6 lead only four minutes into the game. All five of John Carroll's starters scored in route to building that lead.Â
An early lead met the Blue and Gold turned their sights towards their bench and an unfamiliar face made an early impact.Â
Coming off the bench, sophomore P.J. Flannery received the opportunity to play with his older brother,
Sean Flannery. However, the younger Flannery stole the show.
P.J. Flannery made two 3-pointers and added two blocks in the first half.
On the scoreboard,
Sean Flannery was joined by
Jackson Sartain who added 10 points in the first half, including two 3-pointers. Sartain entered the game tonight only four three-pointers away from breaking the OAC career record which is held by Matt Adams from Heidelberg.Â
Sean Flannery led the Blue Streaks with 15 points and Sartain finished two 3-pointers shy of Adams' record.
Â
A great first half of scoring combined with defense to put JCU 49-34 going into halftime.Â
The second half did not start off as strong as the beginning of the game, but it was during this half that John Carroll took their biggest lead of the game of 25 points.
With five minutes left in the game, all four seniors were on the court to end their final regular season game at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Their final moments on the court were finalized with
Ryan Berger finishing his foul shots and the seniors coming out of the game.
The scorebook for John Carroll can really attest to the team win by the Blue Streaks. There were five Blue Streaks that finished in double-digit scoring, led by
Sean Flannery and
Ryan Berger who tied for 15 points. Sartain followed with 14 points and
Jimmy Berger contributed 11 points and added eight assists.Â
John Carroll will play their last regular season game this Saturday at Wilmington College at 3 p.m.
