In many ways, the game was decided in the first ten minutes.
Baldwin Wallace hit five three pointers in the first quarter to build a 23-7 lead and never looked back in defeating John Carroll, 80-63, in the 2020 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Saturday at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.
John Carroll had to play catch up the rest of the day and actually outscored Baldwin Wallace in two of the remaining three periods (18-17 in the 2nd, 21-18 in the 4th), but could never get the lead down to single digits. The Yellow Jackets simply had a day beyond the arc, making 14 of the 30 long range shots attempted and never allowing the Blue Streaks to gain any momentum.
The score was 7-5 in favor of the home team with 5:30 to play in the opening period following an
Olivia Nagy lay-up, but Baldwin Wallace's Izzy Andrews hit a three-pointer the next trip down, and the rout was on. The Yellow Jackets closed the quarter on a 16-2 run, keyed by four long balls - one from Andrews, one from Riley Schill, and two by Sydney Diedrich.
The lead wavered between 15 to 22 points the rest of the game.
Baldwin Wallace (26-2) was led by Hannah Fecht, whose 24 points was the most scored by a single player against John Carroll this season.Â
Nicole Heffington scored 17 points,
Abby Adler contributed 15 and Nagy added 14 to lead John Carroll (23-5), which now must wait until Monday, March 2, at 2:30 to see if it has earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.
Heffington and Nagy were both named to the OAC All-Tournament team.
