Just like yesterday, John Carroll split their two-game series, this time against Muhlenberg. Unlike yesterday the Blue Streaks lost the first and won the second.
"We wanted to win both, but I liked the energy that the team had throughout the day," said coach
Bobby Bell. "We need to be able to keep our energy level up all game and pair that with great focus and that will allow us to win a lot of game."
Game One
Junior Nick Michel got his first career start today and he pitched well throughout the day. Michel allowed two runs in the first inning then settled down into a rhythm that would allow him to shut down the Mules until the fifth inning, where he would allow one run.
Matt Aukerman came in relief for Michel and was able to pitch the final couple of innings without allowing another run. The pitching did their job, it was up to the offense to score.
The offense came when
Henry Haracz singled home a pair of runners in the sixth inning.
David Ferguson and Mike Anderson were able to come around on the Haracz single, but they would be the final Blue Streaks to cross home and the game ended with the Mules coming out on top 3-2.
Game Two
Another first-time starter in game two got the ball. Freshman
Henry Darrow went four strong innings, allowing no runs and giving the offense a chance for some timely hitting.
Sam Heaton was the first Blue Streak to run the 360 feet worth of bases when he scored on a sacrifice fly from
Joe Charpentier. A single in the fourth by Heaton would score Ferguson to make the game 2-0.
Muhlenberg would rally in the fifth and sixth for a total of four runs. Putting the Blue and Gold down two going into the bottom of the sixth.
The biggest hit of the Blue Streaks season happened when
Tyler Cyrus pinch-hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Cyrus smacked a ground ball just inside the first base bag, allowing two runners to score on his first career hit.
Talking about his clutch double after the game Cyrus said, "I'm glad the guys in front of me were able to get on and coach trusted me to come through off the bench. I put in a lot of work in the offseason and it's reassuring to see it pay off in a way that helps my team win."
Scoring on the Cyrus double were
Justin Hanley and Ferguson. Charpentier would get the go-ahead RBI when he singled home
Bennett Cavaretta. The Blue Streaks would add a couple of runs when
Aaron Zawadzki and Haracz would single home
Luke Galioto and
Danny Murphy, respectively.
Duncan Cappar was able to come in and get the win, finishing the fifth inning and completing the sixth. Max Schumaker was given his first career appearance in the seventh inning.
The freshman came through in the pressure cooker of a situation. The first batter grounded to Galioto to third for the first out. Heaton then made a leaping catch at second giving the two outs in the inning. The final out was a fielder's choice, causing the bench to erupt in jubilee for the comeback victory.
The Blue Streaks move to 4-3 on the year after their 7-4 victory over the Mules and will play Waynesburg tomorrow for a single game.
