His time as a player and coach spanned five incredible decades at John Carroll, so when discussing the 100 Years of Athletics at John Carroll, there is no better closer to put in the game than Dr. Jerry Schweickert.

The native of Chicago arrived on campus in the fall of 1955, and soon became a standout player for the Blue Streaks. Not able to play varsity as a freshman, he had to wait until his sophomore year to get his opportunity to shine. He would earn All-Presidents' Athletic Conference accolades as a sophomore quarterback in 1957 and again in 1958. before switching positions and earning all-league honors in 1959 as a running back.

During his playing days, he played quarterback, running back, defensive back, punter, punt returner, kick returner and even placekicker, all the while lettering three times and earning All-Catholic All-American recognition in 1959.

Once his playing days concluded, Schweickert moved to the sidelines to begin his coaching career. He was an assistant coach for JCU from 1960-1964. When Bill Dando left John Carroll to join Hayden Fry's staff at Southern Methodist following the 1964 season, Schweickert was named the Blue Streaks' head coach at the age of 27 in 1965.

For 12 seasons, which at the time made him the longest tenured football coach in school history, Schweickert guided the Blue Streaks to a 56-41-4 (.574) record from 1965-1976. The team captured PAC titles in 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1974. His 56 wins were second only to Herb Eisele at the time he stepped down in 1976.

All the while he was coaching football, Schweickert managed to find time to found the John Carroll University baseball program. a post he held for all but two of the first 23 years of its existence. He compiled 278 victories from 1973-76 and 1979-1995, while directing the Blue Streaks to PAC titles in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989. In 1984, Schweickert guided John Carroll to its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

His baseball honors include PAC Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989 as well as Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1992. The John Carroll baseball field now bears his name.

He did not limit himself to football nad baseball. Schweickert spent nine seasons as an assistant volleyball coach at JCU, first for Dr. Kathleen Manning (1986-1989) and then for Gretchen Weitbrecht (1990-94). He helped the Blue Streaks win two OAC titles and make two NCAA appearances.

Outside the coaching ranks, Schweickert served as JCU Athletic Director from 1981 until 1986. He received his Master's degree in education from John Carroll in 1985, and his Master's degree in Physical Education from the University of Akron in 1979. He concluded his graduate studies by earning a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Akron in 1981.

In 1995, Schweickert was awarded the John Carroll University Alumni Service Award.

After retiring from coaching, Schweickert stayed on at John Carroll as a professor in the Physical Education department.

From 1955 until the present day, it is remarkable to take into account the number of lives touched by the "Good Doctor".
