Heffington and Women's Basketball Frustrates Mount Union in Alliance

| By:
Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio -- On Friday night, John Carroll and Mount Union came down to the wire near the end of regulation. The same happened tonight, only this time, no overtime was needed.

The Blue Streaks defeated the Purple Raiders in a wire-to-wire victory by a score of 84-83, thanks in large part to Nicole Heffington's game-high 30 points and team-high eight rebounds.

To start the game, the Blue and Gold went on a 17-6 run, including five 3-pointers, and never looked back. They led 23-12 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, Mount Union cut into their deficit, as John Carroll led 48-42 at the half.

In the third, the Blue Streaks jumped out to their largest lead of the game, as they were up 70-53 with 1:22 to go in the quarter. This game was far from over, however. In the fourth quarter, the Purple Raiders went on a 13-0 run to make the score 77-75 with 4:06 to go.

Later in the period, the score became 84-83 with 33 seconds left. A pair of missed Blue Streak free throws gave Mount Union the ball with seven seconds remaining. The Purple Raiders got the last shot, but it missed, and the Blue Streaks held on for the victory.

For John Carroll, along with Heffington's monster game, Abby Adler had 15 points, including four three-pointers, Kaelyn Underwood had eight points, Hannah Bouchy had seven points and a game-high five assists, and Olivia Nagy also had seven points to go along with five rebounds.

Mount Union had four players in double-figures. They were led by Kelsie Glass, who had a career-high 24 points, along with Elena Rauhe (18 points), Emma Cannon (15 points and game-high 10 rebounds), and Brianna Gassman (12 points).

Missed free throws were a key factor in this game, as the Blue Streaks were just 3-of-14 (21.4%) from the charity stripe. They were also outrebounded 49-26. On the other hand, the Blue and Gold shot a red-hot 53.8% from the field compared to the Purple Raiders' 41.9%, and had just 15 turnovers compared to Mount Union's 22.

Up next, John Carroll (4-0) will travel to Berea on Friday at 7:00 PM to take on the defending OAC champions, Baldwin Wallace (3-1), in a rematch of last year's OAC Championship Game and the first half of a back-to-back.
