Volleyball Unable to Upset No. 14 Polar Bears

ADA, Ohio -- Heading on the road to face Ohio Northern University, the Blue Streaks knew they had a tall task ahead of them.

Playing in Ada is never easy, especially when you're up against the No. 14 ranked team in Division III.

Despite a hard fight, including a razor-thin margin in the first set, Ohio Northern dealt the Blue Streaks a 3-0 defeat: 25-23, 25-14, 25-14.

Set 1
The Blue Streaks came ready to play in the opening set. After falling behind 5-4, the Blue Streaks tallied six straight points, including a pair of Kailee Herbst aces and a pair of Jennifer Follmer kills.

But Ohio Northern provided an answer, earning five straight points to even things up at 10. The teams traded runs, as ONU scored four straight only to have JCU answer back with four of their own for a 20-19 lead.

John Carroll battled hard down the stretch, as Follmer nabbed a couple kills and Jillian Kellick tabbed a block. But it was not enough, as the Polar Bears did enough to sneak by with a 25-23 win.

Set 2
Awakened by the near loss, the Polar Bears catapulted to a victory in the second set.

John Carroll got out to a 3-0 lead, but then Ohio Northern got going. A 6-0 run pushed the hosts to an 8-6 lead. The Polar Bears continued to vault ahead, as their outstanding front line kept rolling.

Ohio Northern pushed forward to 17-9 and then 19-11. Calamunci authored some late offense, but the Polar Bears took care of business down the stretch for a 25-14 win.

Set 3
Carrying a 7-match winning streak into today, with six of the conquests by sweeps, Ohio Northern did not ease up on the gas pedal in the third stanza.

John Carroll did hold narrow leads in the early going, though. Abigail Kirk, Herbst, Calamuci, and Kellick all contributed kills en route to a 10-8 lead. But then the Polar Bears caught fire.

Ohio Northern roared on offense, going on a 17-4 tear the rest of the way. A 7-0 ONU run did in the Blue Streaks, ending the hopes of perhaps stealing a set from the hosts.

With the defeat, JCU drops to 10-14 overall, including 1-4 in OAC play.

On the stat sheet, Kellick topped the team with 8 kills. Calamunci and Follmer each tabbed 7 kills. Ally Bartolone notched 15 assists and Maddie Maziarz managed 7 assists. Bartolone and Calamunci each notched 8 digs.

Looking ahead, the Blue Streaks will head to Berea on Wednesday to face off with crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace.
