Men's Soccer Celebrates McCarthy Weekend with a Win over Muskingum

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A festive evening saw a deservingly satisfying result.

During the premier event of McCarthy Weekend for John Carroll University Men's Soccer, the Blue Streaks delivered.

The Blue Streaks dominated Muskingum on Saturday night, 3-0.

John Carroll got on the scoreboard and never looked back, scoring again in the 42nd and 87th minute to complete the conquest. The Blue Streaks sent a great crowd home happy with the victory, which opened Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Blue Streaks got the party started in the 8th minute. Lawrence Cersosimo II started the attack with a lead pass from just across midfield to Brenden Swann, about 30 yards out. Swann sent a perfect ball ahead to Jack Foht, fooling Muskingum's backline.

All alone with the goalie, Foht did the rest, right-footing it into the lower left corner of the net for the opening goal.

The Blue Streaks kept up the pressure as the half elapsed. Corner kick after corner kick saw several near missed. The Blue Streaks sent shots high and wide, and peppered Muskingum with chances.

In the 42nd minute, JCU's hard work paid off. Wenzler Award winner Michael Adelman won a 50-50 ball off a goal kick near midfield. He sent it ahead, and physical play by Muskingum turned away the chance. But play kept going, and James Hoover sent a shot on net. Muskingum's netminder made the save, but couldn't secure the rebound.

In danced Jared Mattei. The veteran found his footing, and left-footed it into the lower right corner of the net for the insurance marker. There the score stood at the break.

The stats were staggering at halftime. JCU held a remarkable 18-0 lead in shots, 6-0 in shots on goal, and 10-1 in corner kicks.

During the break, the Blue Streaks honored the 2003 Men's Soccer team. A number of athletes from that incredible team, just inducted into the JCU Athletic Hall of Fame, were honored at halftime.

John Carroll continued to work hard in the second stanza. The efforts weren't rewarded at first, but the Blue Streaks continued to work.

The hosts dominated possession, rarely giving up the ball. Time after time, the Blue and Gold sent a shot screaming towards the net, or just barely high or wide. The "oh so close" moments abounded tonight.

But later in the evening, James Hoover got his due. On his third shot on goal of the evening, the freshman absolutely rocketed a right-footed shot from about 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net.

Hoover had seen several near misses, so to get this goal was super satisfying. It was also his first career goal at JCU, so it was a nice moment for the freshman.

For the game in the 3-0 win, JCU dominated in all categories: Shots (32-1), shots on goal (15-0), and corner kicks (13-3). Connor Robinson got the start, but didn't need to make any saves in the shutout.

Following the McCarthy Weekend triumph, the Blue Streaks will take a moment to breathe before OAC action heats up this week. Mount Union comes to town on Wednesday, which promises to be a great game.
