Men's Soccer Tears Down Purple Wall as Hryszko Scores Twice

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Men's Soccer team hasn't lost to the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders since 2010 and that streak did not end tonight.

The Blue Streaks defeated the Purple Raiders in a 3-0 decision at Don Shula Stadium in an Ohio Athletic Conference rivalry matchup.

With a quick start to the game, freshman forward Jack Foht got an early goal on the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union goalie Tyler Venti attempted to clear the ball, but kicked it straight towards Foht. The freshman found the middle of the net right around Venti, scoring the opening goal of the contest for the hosts.

The Purple Raiders struggled against the Blue and Gold's defense, not getting a clear shot attempt until the 20 minute mark in the first half.

JCU fouled a Purple Raider at the top of the box, giving Mount Union the shot attempt they needed, but the shot went far left, as the momentum continued to swing in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Benjamin Hryszko added to this energy, as he scored his first goal of the night off a header, assisted by Stephen Schutt and Daniel Kalic

The Blue and Gold found themselves ahead by a two goal margin going into halftime.

"The mindset was to keep playing," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06. "We want to play soccer, we want to possess the ball, we want to dictate tempo and I think we did just that. Mount came out with a little more pressure in the second half, but I think we handled it well. We have to keep our foot on the gas and do the right things."

John Carroll outshot Mount Union, 10-3, in the first half and continued this attacking mindset into the second half, as they had eight attempts to the Purple Raiders' five.

Trading the ball back and forth, it did not look like there would be another score during the match. But with 58 seconds left in regulation, Nicholas Ruggiero crossed the ball through the box and found Hryszko stuck behind a Mount Union defender.

Hryszko made a physical play against the defender and was able to get the ball into the net off of the Purple Raiders.

This final goal put the Blue Streaks ahead 3-0 as the buzzer sounded for the end of regulation.

"Any OAC result is always something that we want and cherish," said Mladenovic. "Mount Union is a very good team. They have been regionally ranked in the country, so we knew it was a big match up for us and we knew we had to get in here and get a good result."

With this victory, John Carroll improves to 5-3-2 overall and remains undefeated in the OAC.

Up next, the Blue Streaks will travel to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, October 9 to take on the Capital University Comets with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"Capital is another really well-coached squad," said Mladenovic "We need to keep our foot on the gas and improve every day. We know that we need to start peaking at this time so that when it comes to OAC playoff time we are ready to go and are the best versions of ourselves."
