Men's Soccer Secures a Home Victory over Baldwin Wallace

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll University Men's Soccer faced off against Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening.

Despite outshooting the Yellow Jackets, 23-5, John Carroll needed a goal with two minutes to go by Benjamin Hryszko to win 2-1 in a Wednesday night thriller.

With the win, the Blue Streaks remain undefeated in OAC play heading into the final three matches of the regular season.

John Carroll got off two shots in the first ten minutes, but one went high and the other was deflected. Moments later, the Yellow Jackets had their first shot, which was deflected away by a sliding Daniel Kalic, and nothing came of the ensuing corner kick.

On the next JCU possession, the Blue Streaks had three corner kick opportunities, but none resulted in a solid chance.

JCU had its best chance of the half at the 20-minute mark. James Hoover sent a great cross to Benjamin Hryszko, and Zoltan Nagy made a diving save to keep it 0-0. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, another corner for JCU resulted in a great opportunity for Jared Mattei fresh off the bench, but his header went wide. With one minute remaining, Hayden Haffner put a great shot on goal, and Nagy made another fantastic diving save. Despite a 0-0 score JCU controlled most of the half with a 12-1 margin in shots.

Eight minutes into the second half, James Hoover found space and finally got the Blue Streaks on the scoreboard. The freshman hit a great shot to the bottom corner of the net for the lead.

Connor Robinson made his first save of the night at the 60th minute on a shot by Tom Buser. With about 20 minutes remaining JCU had multiple corner opportunities, but two shots were deflected away. With nine minutes to play, Evan Scott put a far shot on net, and Connor Robinson had to make a leaping save to keep the lead.

With five minutes to play, Baldwin Wallace evened things up. Tom Buser was credited with a goal to tie the game after a failed JCU clear deflected off Buser and into the back of the net.

With two minutes left, Benjamin Hryszko put a shot on net, and it deflected off a Yellow Jacket defender for the Blue Streaks to reclaim the lead in dramatic fashion, 2-1. This was Hryzsko's sixth goal of the season, and second game-winner in as many matches.

Hryszko now leads the team in points and goals through 14 games.

"Tonight was not our best performance, which is a credit to BW and their game plan," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06. "But at the end of the day, we were able to pull off three points in an OAC match, which is very important every time we are on the field in October."

The Blue Streaks improved to 8-3-3 on the season and 5-0-1 in OAC conference play. Their next match will be at Marietta College on Saturday, October 23.
