Women's Soccer Drops Crosstown Match at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio -- On a beautiful Wednesday night from George Finnie Stadium, the John Carroll University Women's soccer team played an important road rivalry bout against Baldwin Wallace.

The Yellow Jackets scored twice to earn a 2-0 home win over the Blue Streaks.

With the defeat, JCU drops to 6-9-1 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets held pressure early, but Taylor Wohleber, Macey Malinkey, and Claire Hollern all negated BW chances early on.

At the 40-minute mark of the first half, Brittany Dufalla almost found the back of the net on a tough, low shot from the right side of the field.

Lauren Gumeny continued her strong night defensively, as she dove to put a foot in the way of an almost sure to score crosser.

Some danger loomed in front of the Blue Streaks at the end in the first half, but great defensive positioning and timing mixed with good goalkeeping kept the Blue Streaks neck and neck with their opposition. The Yellow Jackets' most dangerous chance at the time came on a shot that was inches above the crossbar from the top of the box.

Finally, on a loose ball in front of the net, Bailey Hall would capitalize with 4:38 left in the half on a low line drive.

In a tightly contested game, the Blue Streaks found themselves trailing by one goal at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets started out the second half strong, after Danielle DelGiudice made an unbelievable save on a shot heading towards the top right corner of the net. The rebound was cleaned up by Anna Stewart, extending the lead to 2-0 despite the amazing save by the Blue Streaks' goaltender.

Dufalla and Maura Palmer provided some offense almost immediately after the goal, breathing some life into the Blue Streaks.

Halfway through the second stanza, DelGiudice made a diving stop from point blank range to keep the Blue Streaks' hopes of a comeback alive.

Juliana Kontul placed a solid shot on goal with eight minutes left in the second half, but she was turned away by a great save.

Another set play late found Lauren Gumeny for a shot on net, but once again the Yellow Jackets were able to prevent a Blue Streaks' offense that heated up in the second half from scoring.

Ultimately, the Blue Streaks had a solid in conference road showing, with a very complete defensive effort and spurts where the offense showed what they are capable of come tournament time.

With the defeat, JCU is now 6-9-1 overall and 1-5 in OAC play.

The Blue Streaks return to the field for a 1 pm home match Saturday afternoon against Marietta.
