Blue Streaks Use All-Around Effort to Rout Wilmington on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A dominant effort in all three phases of the game propelled the John Carroll University football team to a 50-7 victory over the Wilmington Fighting Quakers on Senior Day.

Quarterback Jake Floriea threw for a career-high 366 yards, the most in a game for JCU since Mark Myers' 374 against Baldwin Wallace in 2014, and a season-high four touchdowns.  Brennan Fugh hauled in 10 catches for 162 yards and a score for John Carroll as well.

Defensively, the Blue Streaks held Wilmington to 30 yards on the ground, a season-best, and 177 yards through the air and blocked two punts-returning one for a touchdown.

"I think we sent the seniors out on the right note," Floriea said.  "The statement made by the offense and defense was incredible.  We played great and it feels good to play one last home game on the field."

Before the game, the team honored the 35 seniors for their contributions to the football program over the last four years.

"I have so much respect for those guys," Finotti said of the seniors.  "I am more impressed with what they have accomplished as men than what they have accomplished on the football field which is quite a bit."

In what was an overcast day with a slight mist, the Quakers fumbled the snap on their first punt as it went out of the endzone for a safety to put JCU up 2-0 just 1:19 into the game.

John Carroll capitalized on their opening possession after the safety as Jake Floriea found Brennan Fugh for a 29 yard touchdown to extend their lead to 9-0.

Two Wilmington drives later, a blocked punt from Nick Gizzo set up a Floriea two yard touchdown pass to tight end Tadas Tatarunas to go up 16-0 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.

The score marked the first receiving touchdown in the career of the converted-quarterback Tatarunas.

A Grant Gonya field goal would make it 19-0 in favor of the Blue Streaks at the end of the first period.

On Wilmington's ensuing possession, another blocked punt from Gizzo was recovered by Tyler Thimons for a 27 yard touchdown which extended JCU's lead to 26-0.

The Blue Streaks continued to click on offense as they scored on a 15 play drive resulting in a three yard touchdown run from Floriea as John Carroll took a 33-0 advantage into the locker room.

Wilmington started the second half with some life as they forced a JCU three and out and scored on the next possession.

The Quakers' Ace Taylor took a handoff on a sweep and passed the ball to fellow receiver Itika Wynn Jr. for a 61 yard score to end any hope of a Blue Streak shutout.

Wynn ended the game with 112 yards on five receptions and the score while becoming just the sixth player in Wilmington history to eclipse over 2,000 yards receiving.

Just three minutes later, John Carroll struck again as Floriea found Kenny Cross for an eight yard score to extend the Blue Streak lead to 40-7 with 9:14 remaining in the third.

JCU did not score again until 5:53 left in the fourth with a Gonya 35 yard field goal and capped it off on their next drive with a Floriea 19 yard strike to Devin Limerick.

Alec Wallace snagged an interception on the ensuing possession to put the icing on the cake for the Blue and Gold.

The Blue Streaks have won five straight contests and their last 11 against the Quakers.

JCU improved to 6-2 and will head to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg next Saturday, November 6 before finishing up the regular season against #23 ranked Baldwin Wallace in Berea on November 13.

"I definitely hope we carry some momentum next week," Floriea said.  "We have two business trips against two really good teams, so we are definitely going to have to do our job in order to win."
