Volleyball Flies By Comets, Earning a Home Saturday Sweep

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- From start to finish, John Carroll University Volleyball dominated Saturday's Ohio Athletic Conference match with Capital.

The Blue Streaks captured their first conference win of the campaign in convincing fashion, and in front of a nice crowd at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for the team's first home win.

John Carroll captured a 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 win over Capital to advance to 10-12 on the year.

Set 1
Capital opened the match with strong play, building a 5-3 lead. But after a Jessica Liddle kill, Maddie Maziarz took the line and started serving beauties.

With Maziarz serving, the Blue Streaks dialed in. The hosts scored 10 points in a row, making for an 11-0 run. Attack errors harmed the Comets, while Jennifer Follmer and Kailee Herbst authored the offense up front. With a 14-5 lead, JCU never looked back.

Herbst tallied a pair of service aces to advance the lead further to 18-6. A service error ended the run, but then JCU tore off five straight points, a couple coming from Carleen Ellerbruch kills.

Capital scored a few points late to bring it closer, but the Blue Streaks won handily, 25-13.

Set 2
John Carroll didn't need an acclimation period in the second set, as the hosts forced a host of Capital attack errors to roll to an 11-2 lead.

Herbst, Follmer, and Cassi Calamunci anchored the front line in the early going, pushing the lead further. Two Ally Bartolone service aces upped the lead further to 18-6.

Jillian Kellick and Bartolone each tabbed fun kills down the home stretch. The Comets scored some late points, but the Blue and Gold finished things off no problem with a 25-17 conquest.

Set 3
The visitors dashed out to their best start of the afternoon in the third set. Capital pushed out to a  12-7 advantage as the Blue Streaks played a young lineup. JCU narrowed the gap to 12-10 before coming alive for a 7-3 run.

During the stretch, five different Blue Streaks tabbed kills, including freshman Steph Conley. JCU moved forward to a 17-15 lead.

The Comets burst forward to a 20-19 lead, but then the Blue Streaks kicked it into high gear. John Carroll's veterans stepped up and took care of business, as Calamunci and Ellerbruch each contributed on offense for the conquest, 25-20.

For the match, Calamunci and Herbst each recorded 8 kills, with Ellerbruch's five also standing out. Maziarz shined with a team-best 15 assists. Calamunci (15) and Lexi MacDonald (14) topped the Blue Streaks in digs.

JCU's front line deserves plenty of praise, with a .165 hitting percentage while limiting Capital to -.033, and outpacing the visitors in kills, 34-25. Eight blocks also stood out on the box score for JCU.

With the win in hand, John Carroll advances to 10-12 overall, 1-2 in OAC play. OAC juggernaut Otterbein will visit the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Wednesday for JCU's next match.
