Women's Basketball Wins Second Game of JCU Tip-off Tournament, Defeating CMU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Day 2 of the John Carroll Tip-off Tournament went just as well as the first for the Blue Streaks.

In the second game of the 2021-22 campaign, the Blue Streaks rolled past the Carnegie Mellon Tartans, 79-62.

With the win, the Blue Streaks stand as the JCU Tip-off Tournament Champs with a 2-0 mark.

The Blue Streaks didn't need much time to rev up the offense in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. Beth Andrews' squad hopped to a 17-6 early lead thanks to clean layups and a Nicole Heffington 3-pointer. JCU enjoyed a 21-12 margin after the first.

The advantage grew in size during the second quarter. The Blue Streaks kept buzzing, with Kaelyn Underwood, Sarah Balfour, Gabrielle Gevaudan, and others kicking in points. John Carroll sat ahead, 39-26, at the half.

Carnegie Mellon kept things tighter in the third, but didn't manage to shave off the margin in a meaningful way, as JCU stayed in control. Jaylen Hoffmann scored 6 points in a row at one stretch of the third, helping the hosts take a 55-41 lead into the third.

Many of the team's younger players got to see time on the court in the fourth quarter. Halle Landies, Maddie Pietrowski, Giselle Johnson, Kaylee Dingee, Morgan Featherstun, and Olivia Giunta all saw significant time late. JCU tallied a game-high 24 points in the quarter, stretching the final margin of victory to 79-62.

Heffington led all scorers with 26 points on the day. Olivia Nagy played well as always with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Hoffmann chipped in 9 points as well.

"I had a bit of a rough night yesterday, so I was just looking to come in and knock down some of my shots today. We had a lot of points from a lot of different people today," said Heffington. "It's nice to see that we can spread our scoring around. We've talked about depth a lot, we need 1-16 to contribute. We have to use our depth this year to help us out."

The Blue Streaks will have a chance to recuperate, with a scrimmage at Kent State next up on Thursday morning.
