How Sweet It Is: Men's Soccer Back in Sweet 16 for the First Time Since 2003

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Down by a goal early in the game and playing in mid winter weather conditions, the John Carroll Men's Soccer team overcame adversity and won in the Second Round of the NCAA DIII Men's Soccer Tournament, defeating the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a score of 2-1.

The last time the John Carroll Men's Soccer team earned a spot in the Sweet 16 the tournament was in 2003 when JCU Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06 was a sophomore for the Blue and Gold.

Eighteen years later and the JCU Men's Soccer team once again will make an appearance at this round of the tournament.

"I'm extremely proud of this team. I told these guys that they have the ability to be the best team in John Carroll history and they have done just that," said Mladenovic. "Watching them work through all this adversity, I can't say enough how proud I am and I know that we have something left in the tank."

After a delay the game due to the snowy conditions, the physicality between the Blue Streaks and the Blue Jays was apparent as soon as the squads stepped onto the field.

This intensity worked against John Carroll after a foul inside the box set the Blue Jays up for a goal.

Connor Robinson had the initial save for the penalty kick, but Liam Creedon was there for the rebound, launching the ball into the back of the net around the halfway point of the first half.

The Blue & Gold did not give up and focused on possession for the rest of the half, as they were able to begin to test Johns Hopkins goalie, Xander LeFevre.

John Carroll knew a goal was coming as the momentum began to swing in their favor.

To no surprise, Ben Hryszko was the first goal scorer for the Blue Streaks as James Hoover crossed the ball through the box, finding Hryszko in perfect position for the goal.

"It was a great build up that we had," said Hryszko. "It was a great cross and when I saw it, I got in front of my guy and just tried to get it on my head."

Less than five minutes later, Jack Foht added another goal to give John Carroll a one score lead over the Blue Jays. Hryszko notched the assist on what would be the game-winner.

The Blue Streak defense held strong for the final 15 minutes of the game as Johns Hopkins had four shot attempts on Robinson, trying to tie the game.

As the clock counted down, the buzzer sounded and the Blue and Gold were the victors of a hard fought battle.

John Carroll outshot Johns Hopkins 26-14 and led in corner kick opportunities, earning six more attempts than the Blue Jays.

Robinson saved 5 shots following the penalty kick, as he continues to provide a stable goaltending performance for the Blue and Gold.

With this win, the Blue Streaks will advance to the Sweet 16 Round of the NCAA Tournament as they take on Middlebury College on Saturday, November 20 at Amherst College at 1:30 PM.
