Women's Basketball Rolls Past Big Red at Home On Tuesday Evening

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Thanksgiving started two days early for the John Carroll Women's Basketball team as the Blue Streaks feasted by dismantling the Denison Big Red, 93-47, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

All 15 players dressed for the Blue Streaks got minutes, 12 of whom found themselves in the scoring column including four that had 10 or more points.

"I'm really happy that everyone got to play," Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 said.  "Everyone got to have fun and then we had some kids that got to stand out."

The fun started in the first quarter when John Carroll jumped out to a 21-8 lead and shot an even 50% from the field while holding Denison to a measly 17.6% in the period.

The Blue Streaks continued the sharp shooting in the second by shooting just over 58% from the field and stretched their lead to 22 on a Nicole Heffington jumper to go up 44-22 at the half.

JCU piled it on in the third, scoring 28 points and led by as many as 37 while taking a 72-38 advantage at the end of the stanza.

John Carroll emptied its bench in the fourth as Giselle Johnson, Ryley Chambers, and Halle Landies each scored their first collegiate points.

"It means everything to the team to have the bench play, because we're together every day," Andrews said.  "It's hard to show up to practice knowing you might not get that many minutes but these kids do it with a smile on their face. You hear the bench cheering them on when they're out there and they know their expectations are to show up when called upon."

Heffington, Olivia Nagy, and Kaelyn Underwood each scored 16 points for the Blue Streaks while freshman Maddie Pietrowski chipped in 10.  Mikaila Carpenter led Denison with 16 points.

Andrews stressed the importance of having excellent post play in the game.

"We've been putting a big emphasis on inside touches first especially in transition," Andrews said. "The post players did a great job of getting themselves open, finishing at the rim, and rebounding. Our guards did a really good job of delivering them the ball as well."

Size, depth, and possession were also keys as the Blue Streaks outrebounded the Big Red, 52-26, scored 46 points from bench players, and only committed 14 turnovers.

The victory marked the largest non-conference win at home for JCU since November 29, 2015 when the Blue Streaks defeated Alfred State by 53, 85-32.  It was also the most points scored against a non-conference opponent at home since December 1, 2013 against Carnegie Mellon when the Blue Streaks scored 93.

John Carroll will have more than a week off before traveling down to New Concord on December 4 to face Muskingum in both teams' OAC opener.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
