Wrestling Utilizes Youthful Lineup to Fire Past Fightin' Quakers

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- After a lengthy Tuesday night journey, John Carroll University Wrestling returned home with a victory.

The Blue Streaks cruised to a 54-0 victory over the Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers on Tuesday evening. 

With the win, the Blue Streaks advance to 3-1 in duals this season. This marked the second Ohio Athletic Conference match of the 2021-22 season.

John Carroll shot out to a quick lead, as Eddie Wallace accepted a forfeit at 125 pounds and Anthony Santagata drew a forfeit win at 133. So, the Blue & Gold quickly led, 12-0.

In the first contested bout of the day, Americo Milani stepped to the mat at 141. The freshman fired out to a quick 2-0 lead, allowed an escape point, then roared back with six points on a takedown and nearfall. Just before the buzzer at the end of the first, Milani secured a pin at 2:57. 

Kale Buckiso needed the full time to beat his opponent next at 149. The freshman allowed an early takedown before capturing the lead with an escape and takedown. With a 3-2 lead heading into the second, he quickly secured a reversal. He allowed an escape, but tallied 2 points on a takedown and then a penalty point. In the third, he wrapped things up with a takedown to ensure a 12-4 major decision.

Keeping the freshmen momentum going, Trysten Zahoransky took care of business at 157. The Solon grad earned six points with a fall at 2:29. Adam Salek, a freshman from Medina, scored five points at 165. The first-year Blue Streak galloped to a 10-3 lead after the first period, highlighted by a 4-point nearfall. A couple more 4-pointers finalized a 21-3 tech fall at 4:10. 

Daniel Devera did the trick next at 174. The freshman burst out to a 6-0 lead, extending it to 9-1 after the first. After notching a pair of takedowns and an escape, he locked down the pin win at 4:47. 

Brody Arrundale never trailed at 184, but did need the full three periods to accomplish his goal. The Madison, Ohio native controlled the match with a takedown and 2-point nearfall, leading 6-1 after one. A pair of escapes solidified a 8-4 decision. 

JCU placed the exclamation point on the win with a pair of pins at the heavyweights. Jesse Kanatzar locked down his opponent to the mat in 1:25 at 197 pounds, and Connor Bizjak needed 2:00 to earn his six points at 285.

With the 54-0 conquest, the Blue Streaks head into the weekend with momentum. Mark Hawald's team will head to Rochester, New York for the RIT Invitational on Saturday.
