Women's Basketball Ends Kentucky Trip with a Win over the Maryville Scots

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- In a hard-fought affair on Tuesday afternoon, John Carroll Women's Basketball got back on track.

The Blue Streaks defeated Maryville College (TN), 67-64, in JCU's second and final contest of the Transylvania Holiday Classic.

The Blue Streaks advanced to 8-2 on the season with the conquest.

The Scots, of the USA South Conference, had only tangled with the Blue Streaks once before – on March 6, 2015 in the NCAA Tournament. It was the final game of a 4-year playing career for Beth Andrews '15.

Maryville burst out of the gates against the now No. 13 Blue Streaks (per the latest WBCA rankings). After the Blue & Gold picked up an early 10-8 lead, the Scots gallivanted to a 7-0 charge. Sarah Balfour ended the run with a layup at 12 seconds, setting the score at 15-12 Maryville after one.

In the early stages of the second, Maryville stretched the lead to six points. Olivia Nagy and Nicole Heffington shrunk the lead to two, and Abby Adler constricted it further with a triple. Adler then tied the contest at 27 with another 3-pointer. A string of free throws gave JCU a narrow 30-27 lead. Olivia Nagy preserved a 32-31 margin with a layup before half.

John Carroll's defense clamped down in the third. Gabrielle Gevaudan got a steal on Maryville's opening possession, which Nagy turned into a layup. Five points in a row by Sarah Balfour later pushed the lead to 43-33 with 3:03 left in the third. Maryville managed to slim the deficit to 46-39 after three.

Despite JCU's best efforts, the Scots did not let the game slide out of hand. Hannah Bouchy and Heffington hit shots early in the quarter to stretch the lead to eight, but each time, the Scots got shots of their own to fall. With 4:11 left, Maryville finally got within one possession at 55-53, but JCU responded immediately, as Nagy and Heffington each got buckets. JCU upped the lead to eight with 2:40 left on a pair of Bouchy free throws.

But two Maryville triples kept things interesting at 67-63 with 27 seconds left. After a JCU turnover, Maryville got a layup to go with 11 seconds to narrow it to within two. But thankfully for JCU, Heffington and Jaylen Hoffmann each hit a pair of free throws to seal the deal.

Nagy topped the team with 18 points, hitting another double-double with 14 rebounds. The Lakewood native also added 5 blocks, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Heffington hit double figures with 11 points, and Adler did so as well with 11 points. Heffington and Adler crashed the boards with a combined 15 rebounds. Bouchy's 7 points and 4 assists were also helpful.

As a team, the Blue Streaks again did well with 36 points in the paint. They made Maryville pay for their 26 turnovers, turning them into 26 points. JCU shot 13-for-16 from the charity stripe, including an important 6-for-6 in the fourth.

The next scheduled game on the Blue Streaks' slate is against Heidelberg on January 5. The Hiram game on December 31 was canceled due to Hiram College's move to remote instruction and the cancellation of all on-campus, in-person events due to COVID-19.
