Men's Basketball Falters vs. Rowan in Doc Greene Tournament Opener

HUNTINGTON, Pa. -- To conclude what's been an up-and-down calendar year for all, John Carroll University Men's Basketball traveled to Juniata College for the 29th annual Doc Greene Tournament, taking on Rowan University in the first of two games.

The Blue Streaks fought hard, but a slow start allowed the Professors to take a big lead early and never look back, as they notched a 110-91 victory over the Blue Streaks.

The Profs of Rowan University had a fast start and didn't look back. They were aggressive early and often, with Marcellus Ross (25 points) getting to the hoop and making nearly all of his 3's in the first, Arian Azemi (32 points) setting up himself and his teammates for easy layups, and most every Prof on the floor was able to get to the bucket at will.

The Blue Streaks didn't respond well, committing 12 turnovers in the first and getting into foul trouble early. David Gentry (26 points) was once again a bright spot, consistently getting to the line on offense and affecting shots on defense when he could. JCU also did not shoot well in the first, only converting on 35.7% of their shots, and only 22.6% of their threes. Connor O'Toole (22 pts) and Eric Hanna (10 pts) got into foul trouble early, which hindered the Blue Streaks' ability to match the aggressiveness of Rowan.

The Blue Streaks had some success in the first half, having stretches where they would cut the lead to nine or seven points, but Rowan would always answer quickly with several baskets, once again extending their lead to double digits. The effort of the Blue & Gold was not to be questioned, however, as they grabbed 31 rebounds, equivalent to Rowan's total, with 11 offensive rebounds, also equal to Rowan. The Blue & Gold entered the break trailing by 19, and had a lot of work to do to get back into the game.

The second half had a different feel for the Blue & Gold, but it wasn't enough. The Professors again came out aggressive and punched the Blue Streaks, quickly extending the lead to as much as 28, but John Carroll responded this time, battling and matching the intensity for most of the half.

The Blue Streaks started slow in the second half, but halfway through the final period, the team came alive. The Blue Streaks were able to string together several defensive stops, pairing them with baskets. After 8 straight points by Connor O'Toole, JCU cut the Profs' lead to 10 at 95-85 with 4 minutes left in the contest. However, Rowan responded in kind with a 13-4 run of their own, and brought the lead back out to 19 and put the game on ice.

In the end, it was turnovers that cost the Blue Streaks this one, committing 12 in each half, with several coming at crucial points in the game. The comeback ended up not being enough, and the Professors of Rowan finished out a 19-point win, 110-91 over the Blue & Gold.

John Carroll will play the loser of Juniata vs. Bryn Athyn tomorrow afternoon.
