YOUNGSTOWN / CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Indoor track & field season opened well for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll University Men's Track & Field competed at the Youngstown State Ice Breaker on Friday and the Case Western Reserve Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Here's how the Blue Streaks fared this weekend.

YSU Ice Breaker

Garrett Clark showed no signs of rust, polishing off his speedy shoes in the 60m dash. The senior secured sixth with a time of 6.99. Clark followed it up with a third-place time of 21.81 in the 200m, which broke the record of Deven Ward '21. Clark's time currently stands as the No. 1 time in the country, which is a heck of a start to the 2021-22 campaign.

Mark Zahren followed up well in both events, with a personal best of 7.11 in the 60m and a 22.51 in the 200m, his personal best in indoor.

Zach Gerber also warrants a mention, as the veteran dropped .2 in the 60m hurdles for a lifetime best of 8.52.

Jimmy Kartsonas and Corey Minton both finished in the top ten in the triple jump. Kartsonas carded a third-place jump of 13.66m, and Minton landed closely behind in fifth at 13.04m. Minton returned to the track after not competing this past season. Kartsonas hit his lifetime best in the triple jump, and then did his second best long jump ever at 6.76m.

While the finishes did not hit top ten, a Blue Streak did made his debuts on Friday against top competition. Victor Ononogbo ran in the 200m dash, his first race in a JCU uniform. Also, Anton Peregoncev competed for the first time since 2020, taking part in the long jump.

CWRU Holiday Classic

The field events yielded nice results for the Blue Streaks, with a veteran showing great form and rookies making collegiate debuts.

Most notably, Zach Szafarski looked great in the indoor opener, unleashing a toss of 49-09.75 in the weight throw.

Matthew Russo provided a highlight in his first meet, following a season with the football team. The youngster hurled a 44-06.75 in the shot put, snagging second place. Alec Gorman also made his debut in the event. Russo also hit a 43-02.50 in the weight throw.

Zach Walsh clocked in at 23.98 in the 200m dash for eighth to kick off his JCU career. Luke Del Rosso, Adam Balkey, Aryan Malte, Michael Jones, and Evan Smith also made their debut in the event.
