Men's Basketball Falls in Raucous Home Opener at the DeCarlo Varsity Center

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center held its first John Carroll Men's Basketball home game with fans since February of 2020 on Wednesday evening. The student section was in attendance early and rocking for all 40 minutes.

The first half was filled with action and the two teams traded runs early, but a big second half from Darrell Newsom of Mount Union clinched a 93-83 Purple Raiders victory to set the Blue Streaks back to 5-2 (1-1 OAC).

The two teams battled in an energetic DeCarlo Center, as it was a close game in the first nine minutes before a Mount Union run led to JCU trailing almost the whole first half. The biggest Purple Raider lead was 30-20 at the 9:25 mark.

Layups by Chase Toppin and David Gentry cut it back to six, Jackson Sartain hit his third 3-pointer of the night to cut it to three, and Mount Union called a timeout with 8:02 remaining. A big 3-pointer from PJ Flannery made it 32-31 with 5:25 remaining, and JCU tied the game with a big free throw from William Wallace. Flannery hit another with 4:15 remaining to give JCU the lead for the first time since 6-5. However, Mount took the lead back with two free throws from Ethan Stanislawski.

After trading baskets the last two minutes, the score going into the half was 45-44 Mount Union. JCU's leading scorer was Jackson Sartain with 11 points at the half. Sartain started 0-for-5 and broke through with two 3-pointers, while Ethan Stanislawski from Mount Union had 17 point. The story of the first half for the Blue Streaks was missed opportunities. JCU was just 6-of-11 from the free throw line while the Purple Raiders were 7-of-10, and the Purple Raiders had 18 points off 14 JCU turnovers. JCU did lead 19-5 in points off the bench.

Mount Union's offense started fast in the second half on a 14-7 run to make it 59-51 before Head Coach Pete Moran '08 used a timeout to slow momentum. Mason Trubisky hit a big triple to make it 61-54, but Mount Union continued to answer every Blue Streak quality possession early in the second half. The Purple Raiders pushed the lead all the way to 20 with 11 minutes remaining in the game and Coach Moran was forced to call another timeout. Mount Union won the first 10 minutes of the second half, 33-16.

PJ Flannery hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night to cut the lead to 12 with five minutes remaining. Eric Hanna hit another to make it 88-77. Coach Moran took the last JCU timeout with 38.5 seconds remaining and JCU down 10. Mount Union was able to hit their free throws and hold off the JCU offense to win by a final of 93-83.

Darrell Newsom had a game–high 29 points, with 17 in the second half going 7-for-8 from the field. Chase Toppin led JCU with 21 points, and Sartain finished with 18 points (just two points shy of 1,500 in his career) and 11 rebounds, the only player to get a double-double in tonight's matchup. The Blue Streaks finished with 24 turnovers and shot just 53.1% from the free throw line, missing 15 attempts.

John Carroll will host Capital University Friday, December 10 at 7 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The Blue Streaks lead the all time series 45-38 against the Comets and won last year's contest in double overtime.
