NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- A widely-used phrase to describe games and matches in sports has been, "A tale of two halves." To be quite honest, there's not a better way to describe Friday night's encounter between John Carroll University Women's Basketball and Muskingum.

On Friday evening, No. 11 John Carroll walked into the Anne C. Steele Center in New Concord and easily dispatched Muskingum 80-53.

The first quarter could be described as fast and furious, as both teams hit key shots in the early going and relied on physical defense to force some early turnovers. Nicole Heffington was forced to sit early on as she picked up two fouls in the first five minutes, and Leia Smith of Muskingum started, out on fire with ten points in the early going. JCU led after the first quarter, 19-17.

The Fighting Muskies continued to keep the game close and even took a 24-21 lead with 7:23 left in the first half. But after that, it was all Blue Streaks.

From that point on, the Blue & Gold ripped off a 17-2 run to end the first half, guided by a plethora of Blue Streaks getting their names in the scoring column.

After one half of play, the Blue Streaks were outrebounding the Fighting Muskies 25-11 and outscored them in points in the paint by a 26-4 margin. The Blue Streaks led 38-26 going into the break.

Coming out of halftime, JCU used their momentum at the end of the first half and carried it into the third quarter as they outscored Muskingum 22-10.

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter, as the Blue Streaks' lead reached 34 at one point in the final stanza. Thanks to some timely shooting, domination inside the paint, and feisty perimeter defense, John Carroll left Muskingum University with a 27-point victory and an 8-1 record.

The Blue & Gold picked up 80 points despite only shooting 43% from the field and held Muskingum in check with 53 points and a 29% field goal percentage.

Furthermore, John Carroll outscored the Fighting Muskies 21-10 off turnovers, outscored them 56-14 in the paint, and outrebounded them 53-27.

Olivia Nagy (22 points, five rebounds), Nicole Heffington (14 points), Jaylen Hoffmann (nine points, six rebounds), Kayla Gudel (eight points, seven rebounds), and Dani Carlson (nine rebounds) were among the Blue Streaks who had stellar performances.

Leia Smith (14 points, six rebounds), Taylor DeMassimo (11 points), and Abby Jones (10 points, five rebounds), and Camay Blaylock (seven rebounds, four steals) were the key performers for Muskingum.

JCU improves to 8-1, whereas Muskingum falls to 1-6. Both teams will play each other again in University Heights on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for Senior Night.
