Men's Basketball Hits Triple Digits and Plays Staunch Defense to Earn a W

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Coming off a game in which the two teams combined for 212 total points, you had to wonder whether John Carroll University Men's Basketball and Muskingum would put on an encore performance or if Act II would deliver a more solid defensive performance.

Simply put, Act II delivered superb offense AND superb defense for the Blue Streaks.

On Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Anne C. Steele Center in New Concord, John Carroll soundly defeated Muskingum, 100-79, avenging their loss to the Fighting Muskies the previous night.

Both sides relied on streaky offense and pesky defense in the early going, as there were hard-fought possessions on both sides of the floor.

Muskingum held the lead for most of the first half, but Jackson Sartain hit a three to give JCU a 31-29 lead with 6:46 left in the half.

Immediately after that, the Blue and Gold unloaded a barrage of points, as they went on a 23-6 run in the final six-and-a-half minutes of play and led at halftime 54-35.

Mason Trubisky (14 points) and Jackson Sartain (12 points) were the leading scorers for the Blue Streaks and Trey Singleton (15 points) and Alex Mastinelli (eight points) led the way for the Fighting Muskies.

JCU was 9-of-18 shooting 3-pointers and had 22 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play; both of which were keys to their 23-6 run to end the first half.

The second half was more evenly contested, as both the Fighting Muskies and the Blue Streaks went on intermittent runs throughout the final twenty minutes. Nevertheless, JCU outscored Muskingum 46-44 in the final stanza.

Brandon Heigelmann put on the finishing touches as his layup with a few moments remaining gave the Blue and Gold exactly 100 points.

As a team, some of the keys to victory for John Carroll included shooting 36-of-69 (52.2%) from the field, 13-of-32 (40.6%) from three-point range, 28 points off of turnovers, 22 second-chance points, and 42 points in the paint.

What's even more remarkable, however, is that they won by 21 points despite committing 24 personal fouls. If one were to ask coach Pete Moran, however, most of those fouls were the result of the physical defense that stymied the Fighting Muskies nearly all night long.

JCU saw Eric Hanna have a career night, finishing with 24 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Also scoring a career-high 24 points and tallying five rebounds was Mason Trubisky

Jackson Sartain had 20 points to go with three assists and shot 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Emmett Chambers also had a strong night as he scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Hugh Brown scored eight points and managed to snag three rebounds and dish out two assists. Corbin Anthony paired six points with six rebounds as well.

Muskingum was led by Trey Singleton, who scored a game-high 28 points and three rebounds, as well as Alex Masinelli, who tallied 21 points and five rebounds.

John Carroll will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 26 as they travel to Westerville to take on the Otterbein Cardinals at 7 p.m.
