Men's Basketball Falls Victim to Record Shooting Night by Baldwin Wallace

Box Score BEREA, Ohio -- The rivalry between John Carroll University and Baldwin Wallace University goes back many years, but the 126th edition of this rivalry proved to have some historic proportions.

However, history was not necessarily on the Blue Streaks' side on Saturday, as they fell to their rival Yellow Jackets, 90-78, at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. JCU fell to 1-2 on the year, whereas the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-4.

The Blue Streaks led 2-0 early thanks to a Luke Hippler layup. After that, the road to victory quickly became filled with obstacles for the Blue and Gold. Baldwin Wallace used some key runs and some red hot shooting from beyond the arc to continually extend their lead over John Carroll.

After one half, JCU found themselves trailing 54-36. Jackson Sartain led the way with 10 first-half points for the Blue Streaks, whereas Anthony Mazzeo (20 pts) and freshman Drew Wennes (16 pts) had the hot hands for the Yellow Jackets. As a team, Baldwin Wallace hit a mind boggling 13 first-half threes whereas John Carroll was held to four on 14 shots.

As the second half began, the Blue Streaks knew they had to step up their play on both sides if they were going to leave Berea with a comeback win. John Carroll cut their deficit to nine points at one moment in the second half, but the feverish shooting from the Yellow Jackets continued to play a significant role.

Even spectacular shots from JCU 3-point specialist Jackson Sartain and other members of the Blue & Gold weren't enough for them to claw out of their deficit, as they fell 90-78.

When it was all said and done, however, both teams had reached major milestones of their own. Sartain, who already holds the OAC & John Carroll career 3-point records, made his 300th career shot from behind the arc and tied a career-high of 30 points in the loss. For Baldwin Wallace, their school-record 19 three pointers were the impetus of their victory.

Sartain (30 pts., 3 rebs.), Mason Trubisky (7 pts., 4 rebs., 4 asts.), and Corbin Anthony (7 pts., 2 rebs.) were the scoring leaders for the Blue and Gold. Drew Wennes (21 pts., 3 rebs., 3 asts.), Anthony Mazzeo (20 pts., 3 rebs., 3 asts.), and Jake Snyder (18 pts., 6 rebs., 2 asts.) all led BW.

John Carroll (1-2) is scheduled to be back in action on Friday as they travel to Ada to take on Ohio Northern (0-3). Baldwin Wallace (2-4) is slated to host Capital (1-3) on Friday as well.
