Women's Basketball Records Historic Victory over Baldwin Wallace at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- History was made in many ways on Saturday.

For the first time since 2015, the Blue Streaks have beaten the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets twice in the same season.

On Feb. 6, 2021, the Blue Streaks kept their winning ways buzzing as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 62-39 at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

John Carroll limited the Yellow Jackets to just 24.6% shooting and 39 points; the lowest offensive output for a BW team against JCU since November 23, 1985. In that edition of the rivalry, the Blue Streaks rolled to a 73-37 win.

That Nov. 23, 1985, game was also the last time the Blue Streaks beat the Yellow Jackets by more than 23 points.

Only two other times has Baldwin Wallace failed to score more than 39 points in the 86 meetings in the series. The 1985 game and the first-ever meeting on Feb, 8, 1972.

"It's always a goal to force ball pressure, deflections and to make team's uncomfortable by using their counters," head coach Beth Andrews said after the game. "Our defense was so disappointed with themselves yesterday that today they knew they had to bring all of that energy and effort.

"They bought into it together. When a unit of five collectively buys into what we're doing, good things happen. Holding a team to four points in a quarter is just something special."

The Blue Streaks improve to 6-0 on the season with the win. It's been 27 years since the John Carroll University Women's Basketball team has started 6-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

"Our leaders are doing such a good job of taking it a day at a time and also realizing how lucky we are to be here," Andrews said. "They go 110% every single day to be sure they're leaving the court with no regrets. Just in case you don't get that tomorrow."

To begin the game, each team went score-for-score. Then, the Yellow Jackets went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead.

When the JCU needs a basket, is Nicole Heffington always there to get it.

With 15 seconds left in the first quarter, Heffington drained a three-pointer to cut the JCU deficit to 11-10. That turned out to be the last time Baldwin Wallace held a lead in the game.

"A sign of a good team is when you're unhappy. In that first quarter, they were not happy with it," Andrews said. "In the huddle, we asked them what they felt comfortable with. They were able to give me answers and they executed. When they start scoring, their defense picks up that much more."

Heffington's three was the first points the Blue Streaks scored in 4:07 of play and also ignited a 10-0 run that more than put the lead back in the Blue and Gold's favor.

Heffington led JCU with 17 points and has led the team in scoring during each game this season.

At the conclusion of the first half, the Blue Streaks led 26-19.

In the third quarter, John Carroll went on an 11-2 run that put the game out of reach for the Yellow Jackets. Baldwin Wallace did not record its first made field goal until 1:43 left in the stanza, marking 10:50 of play that BW's only two points came off free throws.

JCU answered Sydney Snyder's made jumpshot with a 6-0 spurt that gave the Blue Streaks a 44-23 lead through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, John Carroll outscored Baldwin Wallace 18-16 to secure the victory.

Dani Carlson aided the Blue Streaks with a season-high 14 points. Olivia Nagy fell just two points shy (8 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks) of recording her second double-double of the season. Nagy scored 15 points and added 15 boards in last night's 60-53 win over the Yellow Jackets.

In the assists column, Abby Adler and Hannah Bouchy each helped the Blue Streaks with three each. Bouchy was also one of three players to add a steal; JCU came into the game fifth in Division-III and first in the OAC in steals per game.

Next up, the Blue Streaks will play a home-and-home against Ohio Northern on Feb. 12 and 13. The first game of the series will take place at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Friday at 7 p.m.
