JCU Women's Lax Reaches 10 Wins in a row with Fourth 20+ Goal Output of 2021

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Two teams on opposite spectrums faced off against one another on Wednesday evening. The John Carroll University Women's Lacrosse Team, who came in at a red-hot 9-0, clashed with Heidelberg, who is continuing to fight for their first triumph of the season.

On March 31, John Carroll defeated Heidelberg 23-4 at Hoernemann Stadium in Tiffin as they improved to 10-0 for the first time in school history.

Opening goals from the likes of Mary Doherty, Kendall Gessner (Alex Heishman assist), Carly Ross (Doherty assist), Jenna Ginsberg and Gessner again gave John Carroll an early 5-0 lead before a Heidelberg timeout.

Shortly thereafter, Colleen Grombala found the net three times in a row for her 49th, 50th and 51st goals of the season to make it 8-0 Blue Streaks.

After that, a free-position strike by Olivia Gerlach followed by a Heishman score made it 10-0 in John Carroll's favor.

A few minutes later, a fourth goal from Grombala and a score from Emma Workman (Jenna Ginsberg assist) gave John Carroll a 12-score lead before the Student Princes found the net to make it 12-1.

Finally, Claire Mezzoprete (Gerlach assist) and Grombala added the final scores of the first half as the Blue and Gold led 14-1.

Scoring in the second half led off with goals from Lainey Donalson (Mezzoprete assist), Heishman (Grombala assist),  Mezzoprete (Heishman assist) and Grombala (Workman assist) to make it an 18-1 JCU lead.

Heidelberg soon responded with two goals of their own, but Gessner answered with a free-position score, giving her a hat trick and making it a 19-3 contest.

Nevertheless, the Student Princes continued to fight until the end as they converted another goal, but Gerlach (Jill Jarem assist), Grombala (twice) and Ginsberg all scored to give JCU a mighty 23-4 advantage as play wrapped up.

The Blue and Gold dominated the stat books as a team as they outclassed their opponents in assists (9-2), shots (39-8), ground balls (15-9), clears (9/10-7/12) and draw controls (20-8).

Individually, the Blue Streaks offense was engineered by Grombala (eight goals, one assist, eight draw controls), Heishman (two goals, two assists), Ginsberg (three goals). Ginsberg, Mezzoprete and Gerlach each finished with two goals and one assist apiece. Eleven different members of the Blue and Gold finished with points in the scorebook.

In the midfield and defensive third, Doherty (three groundballs, three draw controls) and Jarem (two groundballs, one caused turnover) led the way.

Up next, John Carroll travels to Otterbein on April 3, at 1 p.m. as they hope to continue their historic run this season.
