Slow Starts Doom Softball to Sweep in Berea

BEREA, Ohio -- Early hot starts by Baldwin Wallace sent John Carroll University Softball home on Sunday with a 4-game sweep.

The Blue Streaks dropped both games of Sunday's twinbill, 8-3 and 7-2.

The Blue Streaks drop to 4-17 overall, 4-15 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Game 1

Emma Gurley got the first hit of the day for JCU in the top of the first and showed off her wheels with a stolen base, but the Blue Streaks could not create a 2-out rally. In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets also had a shot at creating offense via a 2-out rally, and they took advantage.

After reaching on an error on a bunt, Jackie Kasai stole second. Another error allowed Kasai to score. Then a Bridie Bricker double to center plated another. Following an Alex Kozich single, the Yellow Jackets drew another error by JCU, allowing a third run to cross the plate.

In the second, BW added another run to the lead. Back-to-back doubles advanced the Yellow Jacket lead to 4-0.

The Blue Streaks' bats found life in the sixth inning. Emma Gurley doubled to left center to start things off. Kristen Jesberger singled to center, and the resulting throw went wild, allowing Gurley to score, narrowing the deficit to 4-1.

In the top of the seventh, the hosts added three more runs for good measure, thanks to a paur of singles, an error, and a 2-run Kasai double.

Crista Nativio singled and then scored on a Gracie Bressoud triple to right field. Despite the late rally, the Blue Streaks dropped a 7-2 decision.

Danielle Orendi absorbed the loss, allowing 3 earned runs in 6 innings. Nikki Camarati was excellent as usual, striking out 10 in 7 innings, though JCU did get 8 hits on the reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week.

Game 2

Baldwin Wallace again rocketed off to a hot start, spurred after John Carroll scored first.

Kasyn Scarantine got aboard on an error off a bunt. Emma Gurley singled through the right side, sending Scarantine to second. A well-executed double steal set the stage for Kristen Jesberger. The Willoughby South grad hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Scarantine for a 1-0 JCU lead.

Baldwin Wallace responded in kind, punishing the Blue Streaks for six runs. With seven hits, the Yellow Jackets kicked it into high gear to give Hannah Welling a big lead to rely upon.

Madison Eagle entered in the second and settled things down, but did allow a single and a double in the third for a BW run, moving the needle to 7-1.

The Blue Streaks got the run back in the fourth. Lauren Sienkiewicz hit a base knock to open the frame, and Maddie Traub followed up with a single, and both advanced on a throwing error. Serena Paterno hit a deep fly ball, getting enough of it to score Sienkiewicz on a sac fly.

The Yellow Jackets got another run in the sixth, this time off a Bricker homer. The Blue Streaks snagged it back in the top of the seventh, as Scarantine singled and Gurley doubled to slim the deficit to 8-3. But BW settled down and ended things with back-to-back outs to end it.

The Blue and Gold will return to action next weekend, heading to Mount Union on Saturday and hosting the Purple Raiders on Sunday.
