Baseball Splits with Mount Union, Highlighted by Fun Game 1

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- For Head Coach Bobby Bell and the Blue Streaks, the bright side was in game one.

John Carroll University Baseball split a doubleheader with Mount Union, winning 3-2 and losing 18-2 at Schweickert Field on April 17.

In Game 1, Jack Bennett brought in two runs on a base hit single that recorded a season high 2 RBI. Even in a Game 2, the Blue Streaks still found positives.

John Carroll University Baseball earned a 3-2 victory over Mount Union in a game where all of the scoring came in the middle three innings.

Runs were hard to come by in the first three innings, as the Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders were scoreless.

Things changed in the fourth, though, as Mount Union's Eric Schilling was hit by a pitch. Two at-bats later, Corey White hit an RBI single for the first run of the game and a 1-0 Mount Union lead.

That lead didn't last for long. In the bottom of the fourth, JCU's Justin Hanley hit a two-out solo home run, his team-leading fifth of the season, to tie the game at one apiece.

The Blue Streaks continued the scoring in the fifth. In the second at-bat of the inning, with one out, Christian Cassaro hit a single to give JCU a baserunner. Then, with two outs, Sam Heaton walked, giving the Blue Streaks runners on first and second. In the next at-bat, an errant snapback throw to second moved Heaton and Cassaro to second and third. In the same at-bat,  Bennett hit a two-out, two-run single to give the Blue and Gold a 3-1 lead. His 2 RBIs in the game doubled his season total leading into the afternoon.

In the top of the 6th, the Purple Raiders were quick to respond, as Nate Duliba hit a leadoff single and was brought in two at-bats later with an RBI double from Trey Weaver. This made it a 3-2 game, but the Blue Streaks were able to get out of the inning and maintain the lead.

Eventually, in the 9th, Mount Union's Corey White hit a leadoff single to put the tying run on base, but JCU's senior John Merrill was able to complete a two-inning save, his first of the season, and give the Blue Streaks the win.

JCU starter Mitch Midea (3-2) earned the victory with a solid seven-inning performance. He finished the game tallying nine strikeouts, while allowing five hits, two runs (both earned), and a pair of walks.

Game 2: By Kyle Kelly

The Purple Raiders did not wait until tomorrow's set of games to get revenge.

Mount Union's offense shifted it into gear with an 18-run outing that took down the Blue Streaks, 18-2.

After falling down 4-0 through three innings, senior Kasey Anzelc came in and stopped the bleeding with a 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Henry Haracz had a lead-off double and the next at-bat, Hanley drove him for his 28th RBI of the season to cut the Mount Union lead to three.

The Purple Raiders wasted no time to increase their lead with a two-run fifth inning. In the sixth, Mount Union put the game out of reach with a handful of runs that left the Blue Streaks trailing by 10.

In the seventh inning the Purple Raiders added on seven more runs. JCU responded by adding one more run in the bottom of the seventh, courtesy of a Jared Orwell sacrifice fly that scored Luke Galioto. Earlier in the inning, Galioto garnered his first career double and first hit of the season.

Also during the game, Jamon Higley made his first career Blue Streaks performance and also recorded his first career strikeout. Haracz had a pair of hits. Jon Ambro, who came in for relief following an Andrew Steele injury, recorded a season-high three strikeouts.

John Carroll will look for redemption tomorrow for a twinbill matchup with Mount Union in Alliance.
