Men's Lacrosse Routs Pioneers in Saturday Road Match

MARIETTA, Ohio -- On a chilly afternoon, John Carroll University Men's Lacrosse defeated the Marietta College Pioneers by a score of 25-4.

John Carroll advances to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play on the season.

The Blue Streaks fired off to a quick start against the Pioneers, scoring three goals within the first three minutes of the game. Bennett Gorman, Skyler Blake and Brendan Whitty all found the back of the net, with Whitty tallying two assists.

Slowing the Blue and Gold down, Marietta got one on the board, but soon after, Cullen Zarek retaliated and scored his first goal of the day, making the score 4-1 in favor of John Carroll.

Whitty, Blake and Matt Berdysiak finished five more shots for the Blue Streaks, while the Pioneers added one of their own to round out the first quarter with a score of 9-2.

The Blue and Gold furthered their lead in the second quarter with scores from Brendan Hein (1), Kevin Hack (1), Blake (3), and Berdysiak (1), putting John Carroll far ahead of Marietta by a score of 15-2.

Coming out of the locker room, the Blue Streaks' offense slowed, but Hack found the back of the net with an assist from Gorman, jumpstarting the John Carroll offense.

The Blake-Whitty combo would strike again twice, giving Blake his eighth goal and Whitty his ninth assist of the game.

A couple more scores for John Carroll put the visitors ahead, 21-3, over Marietta at the end of the third quarter.

Hack started the fourth quarter off with another goal, while Jared Gorenflo and Sam Rodgers recorded their first goals of the game. Gorenflo finished another, giving him seven goals on the season.

After the clock wound down, the Blue Streaks earned another victory on the season, making their record 9-1.

Blake led the way for John Carroll with nine goals, followed by Hack and Berdysiak with three scores a piece. Whitty and Morgan Morrell contributed nine and three assists, respectively, while Hein snagged five ground balls.

The Blue Streaks are back in action on Wednesday, April 21 at 7 p.m., as they travel down to the University of Mount Union to take on the Purple Raiders for the second time this season.
