Haracz's and Heaton's Stellar Days At The Plate Not Enough in Double-Header Loss to Nationally Ranked Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The best thing about today is there is an opportunity for redemption tomorrow.

The John Carroll University Baseball Team fell 6-2 and 7-1 in a double-header to No. 10 Marietta at Don and Sue Schaly Field at Pioneer Park on April 2.

The Blue Streaks drop to 8-5 (5-4 OAC) on the season and hold a fifth place standing in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Tomorrow, John Carroll is set for another twin-bill matchup with Marietta, who sits atop the OAC with a 12-1 record.

Game One

A pair of two-run innings in the top of the fourth and seventh was the kryptonite for the Blue Streaks. Both JCU's runs were scored courtesy of sacrifice flies.

Marietta cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the second after a pair of walks and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. Although the Blue Streaks fell down one run, it didn't take long for JCU to tie the game.

In the top of the third, base hits by Bennett Cavaretta and Sam Heaton put runners on the base paths. Then, the first sacrifice fly of the day by Matthew Springer scored Cavaretta to lock the score at 1-1, a third of the way through the game.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third with the help of three groundouts to Joseph Olsavsky, the Pioneers scored two more runs in the next inning to command a 3-1 lead. An RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth increased the score to 4-1.

John Carroll mounted a short-lived comeback in the top of the seventh with a leadoff double by Henry Haracz. Two at-bats later, following a Marietta pitching change, Victor Glaser had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Glaser and cut the Pioneers lead to two (4-2). However, two more runs in the bottom of the seventh kept JCU distanced from the lead.

With the help of a single in his first at-bat of the game, Sam Heaton continued his stellar senior campaign with a 2-4 day at the plate. Glaser, Justin Hanley, Haracz and Heaton all recorded extra-base hits.

Game Two

A late scoring run by the Pioneers left the Blue Streaks looking for answers. Haracz had some of the answers but not all of them.

Although the JCU pitching staff surrendered four hits in the first three innings, the Blue Streaks came out of it unscathed on the scoreboard. Except, the Pioneers eventually found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Blue Streaks didn't take long to answer back, as in the bottom of the fifth a lead-off triple by Springer put him in the perfect position to score. Two at-bats later, Jared Orwell drove Springer in with an RBI single to right field to tie the game at one.

Then, the Marietta bats came alive.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers scored two runs during a two-out rally to go ahead 3-1. The runs piled on in the bottom of the seventh, as Marietta came away with a 7-1 lead.

To start off the top of the eighth, Haracz had a lead-off double as the Blue Streaks attempted to mount a comeback. Unfortunately, that was the last hit of the day for JCU, as Marietta held on to the six-run advantage.

Haracz had a heroic day at the plate, going 4-4 and tacking on John Carroll's lone double. Aside from Haracz's four base hits, only Orwell and Springer also had base knocks.
